The Conduct That Lengthens Life
Yudhishthira asks why men die young when the Veda speaks of a hundred years, and what gives a man long life, fame and prosperity. Bhishma answers that all of this comes from good conduct, and then sets out a long series of rules for daily life: the twilight prayers, avoiding another man's wife, speech, bathing, eating, sleeping and relieving oneself, honour to elders, brahmins, kshatriyas and teachers, fasting, foods and garments to avoid, household and marriage rules, and a kshatriya's training. He closes by summing up the marks of a long life and praising conduct as the foremost of all teachings.
