Bhishma Praises Non-Violence and Compassion
Yudhishthira remarks that men crave meat above all other food and asks for the merits of giving it up and the faults of eating it. Bhishma grants that nothing equals meat in taste, but teaches that giving it up brings fearlessness and the protection of all beings. He describes the sufferings of creatures in the womb and in the cycle of rebirth, explains the word mamsa as 'he eats me, I shall eat him', and ends by declaring non-violence to be the highest dharma, gift, austerity, friend and truth, whose merits cannot be told in hundreds of years.
Yudhishthira said
Verse 1 (13.178.1)
ime vai mānavā loke bhṛśaṃ māṃseṣu gṛddhinaḥ | visṛjya vividhānbhakṣyānmahārakṣogaṇā iva

They do not long for cakes of many shapes, for vegetables of many kinds, or for the juicy fruits of trees as they long for meat.

tatra me buddhiratreva viṣaye parimuhyate | na manye rasataḥ kiñcinmāṃsato'stīti kiñcana
On this very point my mind is bewildered. I cannot think that anything here surpasses meat in taste.

sadyo vardhayati prāṇānpuṣṭimagryāṃ dadhāti ca | nāśo bhakṣaṇadoṣaḥ syāddānameva sadā matam
It quickly builds up the vital breaths and gives the finest nourishment. The fault of eating it is destroyed by giving; this alone has always been held.
Note on the text: Removed the stray opening backtick (wiki mark for an interpolated passage that runs through the next two verses). Line 1 = CE 13.117.8a; line 2 = CE star passage 13.117.8b*0594_01 (nāśo bhakṣaṇadoṣasya dānam eva satāṃ matam; reads सदा for satāṃ).

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's numbered text: star passage 13.117.8b*0594_04-06 (line 3 reads दानाद्यः सुशुचिर्मांसं पुनर्नैव च भक्षयेत् for CE 'dānādyaiḥ suśucir māṃsaṃ punar naiva sa bhakṣayet').

Meat has its origin in semen, dear one, without doubt; and in eating it there is great fault, for it is reckoned among defiling things.
Note on the text: Aligner found no match; the verse is CE 13.117.12. Line 2 reads मलेन स हि कल्प्यते where the CE has 'vadhena saha kalpate'; the page's commentary records yet another reading (दोषो निवृत्त्या पुण्यमुच्यत इति झ. Wikisource reading kept.

yajñārthe paśavaḥ sṛṣṭā ityapi śrūyate śrutiḥ | ato'nyathā pravṛttānāṃ rākṣaso vidhirucyate
It is also heard in scripture that animals were created for sacrifice; so for those who act otherwise, the rule is called a rakshasa's.

For the protection of creatures one may kill beasts of prey; there is no such thing as hunting without staking oneself.
Note on the text: Removed the stray opening backtick. Aligner found no match; line 1 = CE star passage 13.117.17d*0595_01 (rakṣaṇārthāya bhūtānāṃ hiṃsrān hanyān mṛgān punaḥ); line 2 = CE 13.117.18a. ce_ref gives the numbered verse holding line 2.

Having come to an equal footing with the animal, one may kill it or not, O king. Therefore all royal sages go hunting, O Bharata; they are not stained by sin, and this is no sin on earth.
Note on the text: Aligner found no match; line 1 = CE 13.117.18c; line 2 = CE 19a; line 3 is a variant of CE 19c (reads न हि लिप्यन्ति पापेन न चैतत्पातकं भुवि for CE "lipyante na hi doṣeṇa na caitat pātakaṃ viduḥ").
Verse 23 (13.178.23)
na hyataḥ sadṛśaṃ kiñcidiha loke paratra ca | yatsarveṣviha bhūteṣu dayā kauravandana
There is nothing in this world or the next like this: compassion towards all beings here, joy of the Kauravas.
Note on the text: Corrected कौरवन्दन → कौरवनन्दन (misprint in Wikisource; dropped न; CE kauravanandana). Aligner found no match; the verse is CE 13.117.20 (line 1 न ह्यतः सदृशं किञ्चिदिह for CE 'na hi tatparamaṃ kiṃ cid iha'; variant, kept).

aniṣṭaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ maraṇaṃ nāma bhārata | mṛtyukāle hi bhūtānāṃ sadyo jāyati vepathuḥ

māṃ sa bhakṣayate yasmādbhakṣayiṣye tamapyaham | etanmāṃsasya māṃsatvamanubuddhyasva bhārata
“He eats me, therefore I shall eat him in turn”: understand, Bharata, that this is why meat is called mamsa.
Verse 38 (13.178.38)
ghātako vadhyate nityaṃ tathā badhyeta bandhakaḥ | ākroṣṭā krudhyate rājandveṣṭā dveṣyatvamāpnute

Verse 40 (13.178.40)
ahiṃsā paramo dharmastathā'hiṃsā paro damaḥ | ahiṃsā paramaṃ dānamahiṃsā paramaṃ tapaḥ
Non-violence is the highest dharma, and non-violence the highest self-restraint; non-violence is the highest gift, non-violence the highest austerity.
Verse 41 (13.178.41)
ahiṃsā paramo yajñastathā'hiṃsā paraṃ balam | ahiṃsā paramaṃ mitramahiṃsā paramaṃ sukham | ahiṃsā paramaṃ satyamahiṃsā paramaṃ śrutam
Non-violence is the highest sacrifice, and non-violence the highest strength; non-violence is the highest friend, non-violence the highest happiness; non-violence is the highest truth, non-violence the highest learning.
Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (13.117.38): Wikisource prints only one line here (अहिंसा परमं मिमहिंसा परमं सुखम्), the middle line of the three-line CE verse; lines 1 and 3 (CE 38a ahiṃsā paramo yajñas tathāhiṃsā paraṃ balam; CE 38e ahiṃsā paramaṃ satyam ahiṃsā paramaṃ śrutam) are restored from the CE in Devanagari. Corrected मिमहिंसा → मित्रमहिंसा (misprint in Wikisource; CE 38c 'ahiṃsā paramaṃ mitram ahiṃsā paramaṃ sukham'). The input joined this line with the next page row; the page's own verse-end marks (।। after सुखम्, after नैतत्तुल्यमहिंसया, after यथा पिता) are followed, so verses 41-44 are re-divided to match the CE couplets.
Verse 42 (13.178.42)
sarvayajñeṣu vā dānaṃ sarvatīrtheṣu vā plutam | sarvadānaphalaṃ vā'pi naitattulyamahiṃsayā
Neither the gift made at all sacrifices, nor bathing at all holy places, nor the fruit of all gifts, equals non-violence.
Note on the text: Re-divided to follow the page's verse-end mark: the verse is the second line of Wikisource row 41 (सर्वयज्ञेषु वा दानं सर्वतीर्थेषु वा प्लुतम्) with the first line of row 42 (सर्वदानफलं वाऽपि नैतत्तुल्यमहिंसया) = CE 13.117.39a, 39c (the input had paired lines by table row).
Verse 43 (13.178.43)
ahiṃsrasya tapo'kṣayyamahiṃsro jayate sadā | ahiṃsraḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ yathā mātā yathā pitā
The austerity of the non-violent is imperishable, and the non-violent man always conquers. The non-violent man is to all beings as a mother and as a father.
Note on the text: Re-divided to follow the page's verse-end mark: line 1 is the second line of Wikisource row 42 and line 2 the first line of row 43 = CE 13.117.40a, 40c. Corrected अहिंसस्य → अहिंस्रस्य (misprint in Wikisource; CE ahiṃsrasya). Line 1 reads अहिंस्रो जयते सदा where the CE has 'ahiṃsro yajate sadā'; variant, kept.
Verse 44 (13.178.44)
etatphalamahiṃsāyāṃ bhūyaśca kurupuṅgava | na hi śakyā guṇā vaktumapi varṣaśatairapi
This is the fruit of non-violence, and more besides, O best of the Kurus; its merits cannot be told even in hundreds of years.
Note on the text: Re-divided to follow the page's verse-end mark: line 1 is the second line of Wikisource row 43 (एतत्फलमहिंसायां भूयश्च कुरुपुङ्गव) and line 2 is row 44 (न हि शक्या गुणा वक्तुमपि वर्षशतैरपि) = CE 13.117.41a, 41c (the input had left the last line alone as a one-line verse).
