Vyasa Praises Austerity, Giving and the Worship of Hari

Vyasa answers Maitreya's praise of giving by praising austerity: all the scriptures and ways of conduct follow the Veda, and by austerity a man overcomes what is hard to cross and is freed even from grave sin. He says the learned, the ascetic and the giver are all to be honoured and that the giver is praised wherever he goes. He tells Maitreya to keep the householder's vow, and adds that by giving, austerity and the worship of Vishnu a brahmin crosses the ocean of rebirth. Vyasa then takes his leave, and Maitreya bows to him.
