The Elephant Renuka and the Offering at the Anthill
Brahma tells the gods that the mighty elephant Renuka, of Rasatala, should ask the elephants that bear the earth for the secrets of dharma, and the gods send him. The elephants of the quarters teach him an offering to the serpents: on the dark eighth of Kartika under Ashlesha, rice cooked with jaggery is presented at an anthill at sunset with a mantra, and kept up for a year. The gods, ancestors and sages then honour Renuka.
