Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 228

Fate and Effort, the Entry of the Self, and the Doubt of Unbelievers

Uma asks whether everything comes from fate or from effort, and Maheshvara explains that both work together, as in farming: human effort must come first, and fate gives the result. He describes how the self enters the womb, how Brahma, finding heaven overcrowded, clouded men's memory of past lives and gave them desire and anger, and how he made the other world visible only to knowledge. Uma then voices the unbelievers' doubts about rebirth and action, and Maheshvara answers that this is the view of those who despise scripture, and that faith in what is heard is the way to what is good.

anyo garbhagato bhūtvā tatraiva nidhanaṃ gataḥ | punaranyaccharīraṃ tatpraviśya bhuvi jāyate | tatvavinnaiva sarvastu daivayogastu sambhavet

One goes into a womb and dies right there; another, entering another body, is born on earth. It is not that everyone knows the truth of this; it comes about only through the working of fate.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition proper (vulgate recension); parallel text in Appendix I No. 15 (after 13.134.57d), lines 2552-2554 (a three-line verse; the third line differs in wording).

sūtikāyā hitārthaṃ ca mohanārthaṃ ca dehinām | samakarmavidhānatvādityevaṃ viddhi śobhane

It is for the benefit of the woman in childbed and for the bewildering of embodied beings, since the ordering of action is the same for all: so understand it, O lovely one.

Some, still longing, pass on after enduring hell; this is what is called the illusion of Samyamana, in the interval between birth and death. Thus it has been told to you, goddess; what more do you wish to hear?
