The Honour Due to Brahmins

Yudhishthira asks whom one should honour and bow to, and how to behave so as to come to no harm. Bhishma answers that brahmins are to be honoured as the embankments of dharma, upholders of the worlds and bearers of the sacrifice, whose austerity gives them power even over the gods. Learned or unlearned, a brahmin is a great deity, like fire that is never defiled, and is to be revered in every case.

avidvānbrāhmaṇo devaḥ pātraṃ vai pāvanaṃ mahat | vidvānbhūyastaro devaḥ pūrṇasāgarasannibhaḥ

An unlearned brahmin is a god and a great vessel that purifies; a learned one is a still greater god, like a full ocean.
