The Marks of the Good and the Wicked
Yudhishthira asks where those who despise dharma and those who follow it go. Bhishma says the first go to hell and the second to heaven, then describes the conduct of the good: courtesy to elders, guests and the weak, truthfulness (with the example of the cow Bahula), reverence for cows and brahmins, and rules of eating, speech and behaviour. He closes by teaching that a hidden sin grows while a confessed and atoned sin dissolves, and that dharma should be practised without display.

People whose minds are overspread with rajas and tamas, and who hate dharma, go to hell.
Note on the text: Corrected धर्मविद्वेषिमो → धर्मविद्वेषिणो (misprint in Wikisource; not a valid form; critical edition 13.148.2 reads dharmavidveṣiṇo).

But those, great king, who constantly wait upon dharma, devoted to truth and uprightness, are the good, and they are the men who enjoy heaven.
Note on the text: Corrected स्वर्गभूजो → स्वर्गभुजो (misprint in Wikisource; long ū is wrong in svargabhuj; critical edition 13.148.3 reads svargabhujo).
Verse 4 (13.268.4)
dharma eva ratisteṣāmācāryopāsanādbhavet | devalokaṃ prapadyante ye dharmaṃ paryupāsate

prathamaṃ brahmaṇaḥ putraṃ dharmamāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ | dharmiṇaḥ paryupāsante phalaṃ pakvamivāśinaḥ
The wise call dharma the first-born son of Brahma. The righteous partake of him as people enjoy a ripe fruit.
Note on the text: Corrected ब्रह्म्णः → ब्रह्मणः (misprint in Wikisource; broken conjunct; critical edition 13.148.6 reads brahmaṇaḥ).

The bad are of evil conduct, overbearing and foul-mouthed; the good are rich in character. This is the mark of right conduct.
Verse 9 (13.268.9)

and who give way on the road to the aged, to those weighed down by loads, to women, to a child or a sick person, and to brahmins, cows and kings,
Note on the text: Corrected भारतप्रानां → भारतप्तानां (misprint in Wikisource; not a word; critical edition 13.148.12 reads bhārataptānām, “those worn down by a burden”).
Verse 13 (13.268.13)

atithīnāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ preṣyāṇāṃ svajanasya ca | sāmānyaṃ bhojanaṃ kuryātsvayaṃ nāgryaśanaṃ vrajet
and who, for all guests, for servants and for their own kin, make the meal common to all, and do not themselves go to eat first,
Note on the text: Stray wiki mark (backtick) removed. Line 1 = CE 13.148.13a; line 2 is the first line of the CE star passage *0684 (13.148.013b*0684_01, “sāmānyaṃ bhojanaṃ …”), which the vulgate inserts after 13a. The CE verse’s own second line (13c) comes later in this text, as verse 18.
Verse 14 (13.268.14)
na satyārjavadharmasya tulyamanyacca vidyate | bahulā nāma gaustena gatimagryāṃ gatā kila

muniśāpāddvijaḥ kaścidvyāghratāṃ samupāgataḥ | bahulāṃ bhakṣaṇarucirāsvādya śapathena tu
A certain brahmin, through a sage’s curse, had become a tiger. Eager to eat Bahula, he had her in his power, but only on the strength of an oath.
Note on the text: Not in the main text of the critical edition: CE star passage *0684 (13.148.013b*0684_04–05). The much longer telling of the Bahula story is CE Appendix I No. 20 (13.150.009d@020), which this Wikisource page does not carry.
Verse 16 (13.268.16)

tathā śaraṇakāmānāṃ goptā syātsvāgatapradaḥ
In the same way, one should be a protector of those who seek refuge, and give them a welcome.
Note on the text: Verse division rebuilt from the page’s own verse-end marks: the page ends this verse (“।।”) after the single line “तथा शरणकामानां …” (the raw row 13-268-18 pairs it with the next line, but the page prints the verse-end mark after it). This line is CE 13.148.13c (the second line of CE verse 13, which the vulgate separates from 13a by the inserted star passage *0684).
Verse 19 (13.268.19)
sāyaṃ prātarmanuṣyāṇāmaśanaṃ devanirmitam | nāntarā bhojanaṃ dṛṣṭamupavāsavidhirhi saḥ
The gods have ordained men’s meals for the evening and the morning; eating in between is not seen as prescribed—for that is the rule of fasting.
Note on the text: Verse division rebuilt from the page’s own verse-end marks (the input paired the preceding single line with this one): lines = raw 13-268-18b + 13-268-19a = CE 13.148.14a, c.
Verse 20 (13.268.20)
homakāle yathā vahniḥ kāle homaṃ pratīkṣate | ṛtukāle tathā''dhānaṃ pitaraśca pratīkṣate | nānyadā gacchate yastu brahmacaryaṃ ca tatsmṛtam
As the fire awaits the oblation at the time of the fire-offering, so at the wife’s season the ancestors await conception; and he who goes to his wife at no other time—that, too, is remembered as brahmacharya.
Note on the text: Verse division rebuilt from the page’s own verse-end marks: three lines = raw 13-268-19b + 13-268-20a + 13-268-20b = CE 13.148.15a, c, e (a three-line verse in the CE).
Verse 21 (13.268.21)
amṛtaṃ brāhmaṇā gāva ityetattrayamekataḥ | tasmādgobrāhmaṇānnityamarcayeta yathāvidhi
Nectar, brahmins and cows: these three are one. Therefore one should always worship cows and brahmins according to rule.
Note on the text: Corrected तस्मादोब्राह्मणान् → तस्माद्गोब्राह्मणान् (misprint in Wikisource; dropped conjunct; critical edition 13.148.16 reads tasmād gobrāhmaṇaṃ).
Verse 22 (13.268.22)
yajuṣāṃ saṃskṛtaṃ māṃsamupabhuñjanna duṣyati | pṛṣṭhamāṃsaṃ vṛthāmāṃsaṃ putramāṃsaṃ ca tatsamam
Meat consecrated with a Yajus mantra does not defile the one who eats it. Meat from the back, meat eaten to no purpose, and the flesh of one’s son are alike.
Note on the text: Corrected उपभुञ्जत दुष्यति → उपभुञ्जन्न दुष्यति (misprint in Wikisource; not a valid form in context and the negative is lost; critical edition 13.148.17 reads upabhuñjan na duṣyati).
Verse 23 (13.268.23)
svadeśe paradeśe vā'pyatithiṃ nopavāsayet | karma vai saphalaṃ kṛtvā guruṇāṃ pratipādayet
At home or in a foreign land, one should never let a guest go hungry. Having made his work bear fruit, he should present it to his teachers.
Verse 24 (13.268.24)
gurubhyastvāsanaṃ deyamabhivādyābhipūjya ca | gurumabhyarcya vardhante āyuṣā yaśasā śriyā
A seat should be given to one’s teachers, after greeting and honouring them. By honouring teachers, men grow in life, fame and prosperity.
Verse 25 (13.268.25)
vṛddhānnābhibhavejjātu na caitānpreṣayediti | nāsīnaḥ syātsthiteṣvevamāyurasya na riṣyate
He should never overpower the elders, nor order them about; nor should he sit while they stand. In this way his life does not decline.
Verse 26 (13.268.26)
na nagnāmīkṣate nārīṃ na nagnānpuruṣānapi | maithunaṃ satataṃ guptaṃ tapaścaiva samācaret
He should not look at a naked woman, nor at naked men; he should keep intercourse always private, and practise austerity.
Note on the text: Corrected नग्रामीक्षते → नग्नामीक्षते and नग्रान्पुरुषानपि → नग्नान्पुरुषानपि (misprint in Wikisource; ग्र for ग्न, “naked”; critical edition 13.148.21 reads na nagnām īkṣate, na … puruṣān).
Verse 27 (13.268.27)
tīrthānāṃ guravastīrthaṃ śucīnāṃ hṛdayaṃ śuci | darśanānāṃ paraṃ jñānaṃ santoṣaḥ paramaṃ sukham
Of holy places the teachers are the holy place; of pure things the heart is pure; of philosophies the highest is knowledge; contentment is the highest happiness.
Verse 28 (13.268.28)
sāyaṃ prātaśca vṛddhānāṃ śṛṇuyātpuṣkalā giraḥ | śrutamāpnoti hi naraḥ satataṃ vṛddhasevayā
Morning and evening he should listen to the rich words of the elders; by constantly serving the aged, a man gains learning.
Verse 29 (13.268.29)
svādhyāye bhojane caiva dakṣiṇaṃ pāṇimuddharet | yacchedvāṅmanasī nityamindriyāṇi tathaiva ca
At study and at meals he should keep his right arm free (the sacred thread worn over the left shoulder), and always restrain speech, mind and the senses.
Verse 30 (13.268.30)
saṃskṛtaṃ pāyasaṃ nityaṃ yāvakaṃ kṛsaraṃ haviḥ | aṣṭakāḥ pitṛdaivatyā grahāṇāmabhipūjanam
He should always have milk-rice, barley gruel, kṛsara (a dish of rice and sesame), and the oblation properly prepared; the Ashtaka rites belong to the ancestors and the gods; and the planets are to be worshipped.
Verse 31 (13.268.31)
śmaśrukarmaṇi maṅgalyaṃ kṣutānāmabhinandanam | vyādhitānāṃ ca sarveṣāmāyuṣāmabhinandanam
At the shaving of the beard an auspicious word is to be said; to those who sneeze, a blessing; and to all the sick, a wish for long life.
Verse 32 (13.268.32)
na jātu tvamiti brūyādāpannopi mahattaram | tvaṃkāro vā vadho veti vidvatsu na viśiṣyate | avarāṇāṃ samānānāṃ śiṣyāṇāṃ ca samācaret
Even in distress, he should never say “you” (tvam) to a superior, for among the learned, addressing a person as “tvam” is no different from killing him. With inferiors, equals and pupils he may behave so.
Note on the text: Corrected महृत्तरम् → महत्तरम् (misprint in Wikisource; not a word; critical edition 13.148.27 reads mahattaram).
Verse 33 (13.268.33)
pāpamācarate nityaṃ hṛdayaṃ pāpakarmaṇām | jñānapūrvakṛtaṃ karma cchādayante hyasādhavaḥ
The hearts of evildoers are constantly bent on wrongdoing; the wicked hide the deeds they have done knowingly.
Note on the text: CE mapping: line 1 = CE 13.148.28a, line 2 = CE 13.148.29a (Wikisource recombines the CE’s lines in a different order).
Verse 34 (13.268.34)
jñānapūrvaṃ vinaśyanti gūhamānā mahājane | na māṃ manuṣyāḥ paśyanti na māṃ paśyanti devatāḥ
Those who hide it from the people perish, though they acted knowingly, thinking: “Neither men see me, nor do the gods.”
Note on the text: CE mapping: line 1 = CE 13.148.28c, line 2 = CE 13.148.29c.
Verse 35 (13.268.35)
pāpenābhihitaḥ pāpaḥ pāpamevābhijāyate
The sinner, struck down by sin, is born again only to sin.
Note on the text: CE mapping: this single line = CE 13.148.29e.
Verse 36 (13.268.36)
yathā vārdhuṣiko vṛddhiṃ dinabhede pratīkṣate | dharmeṇa pihitaṃ pāpaṃ dharmamevābhivardhayet
As a moneylender waits for his interest when the day of reckoning comes, so, with sin covered over by dharma, one should increase dharma alone.
Verse 37 (13.268.37)
yathā lavaṇamambhobhirāplutaṃ pravilīyate | prāyaścittahataṃ pāpaṃ tathā sadyaḥ praṇaśyati
As salt dropped into water dissolves, so sin struck by expiation is quickly destroyed.
Verse 38 (13.268.38)
tasmātpāpaṃ na gūheta gūhamānaṃ vivardhate | kṛtvā tu sādhuṣvākhyāyādharmaṃ praśamayantyuta
Therefore one should not hide a sin; hidden, it grows. Having confessed the wrong to the good, they set it at rest.
Note on the text: Corrected सादुष्वाख्याय → साधुष्वाख्याय (misprint in Wikisource; not a word; critical edition 13.148.32 reads sādhuṣv ākhyeyaṃ).
Verse 39 (13.268.39)
āśayā sañcitaṃ dravyaṃ svakāle nopabhujyate | anye caitatprapadyante viyoge tasya dehinaḥ
Wealth hoarded out of desire is not enjoyed in its season; when its owner departs, others take it.
Note on the text: Corrected चैतत्प्रद्यन्ते → चैतत्प्रपद्यन्ते (misprint in Wikisource; dropped syllable; critical edition 13.148.33 reads prapadyante).
Verse 40 (13.268.40)
taddharmasādhanaṃ nityaṃ saṅkalpāddhanamārjayet | mananaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ dharmamāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ | tasmātsarvāṇi bhūtāni dharmameva samāsate
That wealth is the instrument of dharma; by firm resolve one should ever acquire wealth. The wise say that dharma is a matter of the mind in all beings; therefore all beings rely on dharma alone.
Note on the text: Verse division rebuilt from the page’s own verse-end marks (the input paired rows 13-268-40/41 differently, ending verses one line early). This verse = raw 13-268-40a + 40b + 41a (a three-line verse). Line 1 is CE star line 13.148.033d*0686_01; lines 2–3 are CE 13.148.34a, c. Stray wiki marks (backtick and apostrophe) removed.
Verse 41 (13.268.41)
eka eva careddharmaṃ na dharmadhvajiko bhavet | dharmavāṇijakā hyete ye dharmamupabhuñjate
One should practise dharma alone, and not become a flaunter of dharma. Those who live off dharma are merchants of dharma.
Note on the text: Verse division rebuilt from the page’s own verse-end marks: raw 13-268-41b + 42a = CE 13.148.35a, c.
Verse 42 (13.268.42)
arceddevānadambhena sevetā'māyayā gurūn | dhanaṃ nidadhyātpātreṣu paratrārthaṃ samāvṛtam
One should worship the gods without hypocrisy and serve one’s teachers without guile; one should lay up wealth in worthy recipients, safely stored for the sake of the next world.
Note on the text: Verse division rebuilt from the page’s own verse-end marks: raw 13-268-42b + 43a = CE 13.148.36a, c (second line a vulgate variant of CE “nidhiṃ nidadhyāt pāratryaṃ yātrārthaṃ dānaśabditam”). After 13.148.36 the CE continues with Appendix I No. 19 (13.148.036d@019, the “mental tirthas” dialogue), which this page does not carry.
