Shri Tells Rukmini Where She Dwells

Yudhishthira asks in what kind of man and woman the goddess Shri dwells. Bhishma recounts how Rukmini, seeing Shri seated on Narayana's lap, asked her this, and Shri's answer: she lives in the capable, grateful, self-controlled and devout, in virtuous and devoted wives, in clean homes where the fire, the gods and brahmins are honoured, and above all in Narayana; she avoids the idle, the faithless, the quarrelsome and the slovenly.

Verse 1 (13.32.1)

कीदृशे पुरुषे तात स्त्रीषु भरतर्षभ । श्रीः पद्मा वसते नित्यं तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥

kīdṛśe puruṣe tāta strīṣu bharatarṣabha | śrīḥ padmā vasate nityaṃ tanme brūhi pitāmaha

In what kind of man, dear grandsire, and in what women, O best of the Bharatas, does Shri, the lotus-goddess, always dwell? Tell me that, grandsire.

Note on the text: Line 1 reads स्त्रीषु where the CE has strīṣu vā; recension variant, kept.

Verse 2 (13.32.2)

अत्र ते वर्णयिष्यामि यथावृत्तं यथाश्रुतम् । रुक्मिणी देवकीपुत्रसन्निधौ पर्यपृच्छत ॥

atra te varṇayiṣyāmi yathāvṛttaṃ yathāśrutam | rukmiṇī devakīputrasannidhau paryapṛcchata

On this I shall relate to you, as it happened and as I have heard it: Rukmini once asked, in the presence of Devaki's son (Krishna).

Note on the text: Line 1 reads वर्णयिष्यामि यथावृत्तम् where the CE has vartayiṣyāmi yathādṛṣṭam; recension variant, kept.

Verse 3 (13.32.3)

nārāyaṇasyāṅkagatāṃ jvalantīṃ | dṛṣṭvā śriyaṃ padmasamānavaktrām | kautūhalādvismitacārunetrā | papraccha mātā makaradhvajasya

Seeing Shri, radiant, seated on Narayana's lap, her face like a lotus, the mother of Makaradhvaja (the god of love), her lovely eyes wide with wonder, asked out of curiosity:

Note on the text: Corrected मकरध्वजस्यष → मकरध्वजस्य (misprint in Wikisource; stray letter at the end; CE makaradhvajasya). Merged two input verses (the input had split this four-line verse at the page's row break): the page prints it as two rows of two lines, labelled 13-32-3a, 3b and (by a numbering slip) 4a, 3d. Together they are one verse, = CE 13.11.3 (3a and 3c, each of two pādas). This is why the input's verse numbers ran backwards (3, 4, 4).

Verse 4 (13.32.4)

kānīha bhūtānyupasevase tvaṃ | santiṣṭhase kāni ca sevase tvam | tāni trilokeśvarabhūtakānte | tattvena me brūhi maharṣikanye

What beings do you attend upon, and in which do you dwell, and which do you serve? Tell me truly about them, O beloved of the Lord of the three worlds, O daughter of the great sage.

Note on the text: Speaker: Rukmini's own words fill the whole verse; the page prints no heading (the input carried Bhishma). The input's second row numbered 4 is this verse (the page's own label 13-32-4). Line 2 reads सन्तिष्ठसे कानि च सेवसे त्वम् where the CE has saṃtiṣṭhatī kāni na sevase tvam; recension variant, kept.

Thus addressed by the goddess (Rukmini) in the presence of him whose banner bears Garuda, Shri, moon-faced and serene, spoke these sweet and charming words.

Note on the text: Corrected श्रीराभिभाष्यमाणा → श्रीरभिभाष्यमाणा (misprint in Wikisource; doubled vowel in the sandhi; CE śrīr abhibhāṣyamāṇā).

I dwell always, fair lady, in the bold and capable man who keeps to his work; in one free of anger, devoted to the gods, grateful, master of his senses, and ever full of inner strength.

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 = CE 13.11.6a (line 1 worded differently: CE vasāmi satye subhage pragalbhe; recension variant); lines 3–4 = CE star passage *0058_01-02 (printed after 13.11.6b).

Verse 7 (13.32.7)

nākarmaśīle puruṣe vasāmi | na nāstike sāṅkarike kṛtaghne | na bhinnavṛtte na nṛśaṃsavṛtte | na cāvinīte na guruṣvasūyake

I do not dwell in a man who shuns action, nor in an unbeliever, a creator of disorder, or an ungrateful man; not in one of broken conduct or cruel conduct, nor in the unmannerly, nor in one who envies his elders.

Note on the text: Lines = CE 13.11.6c and 6e (line 4 worded differently: CE na cāpi caure na guruṣv asūye; recension variant, kept).

Verse 8 (13.32.8)

Those of little vigour, strength, spirit and self-respect, who grieve and flare into anger at every turn, men whose designs are kept hidden: among such men I do not stay.

Note on the text: Line 1 reads ये चाल्पतेजोबलसत्त्वमानाः where the CE has ye cālpatejobalasattvasārāḥ, line 2 क्लिश्यन्ति where the CE has hṛṣyanti, and line 4 सङ्गुप्त- where the CE has saṃsupta-; recension variants, kept.

Verse 9 (13.32.9)

yaścātmani prārthayate na kiñcid | yaśca svabhāvopahatāntarātmā | teṣvalpasantoṣarateṣu nityaṃ | nareṣu nāhaṃ nivasāmi samyak

In the man who asks nothing for himself, in the man whose inner self is marred by his own nature, and in those who are always content with little: in such men I do not rightly dwell.

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page: (1) the page breaks the word किञ्चिद् across the line ("किञ्चि-" / "द्यश्च …"); the द् is joined back to line 1 and line 2 reads यश्च. (2) Line 3 of the page is a repeat of line 2 ("द्यश्च स्वभावोपहतान्तरात्मा"), a visible loss; restored from the critical edition (13.11.8c): तेष्वल्पसन्तोषरतेषु नित्यं (teṣv alpasaṃtoṣarateṣu nityaṃ). (3) Corrected स्म्यक् → सम्यक् in line 4 (misprint in Wikisource; the CE has devi in its place, a recension variant).

In those whose time is never fruitless, who are ever devoted to giving and purity, who love continence, austerity, knowledge, cows and brahmins,

Note on the text: Corrected दानशौचरतषु → दानशौचरतेषु (misprint in Wikisource; wrong vowel sign; CE star passage *0059_01 snānaśaucarateṣu). This verse is CE star passage *0059_01-02 (printed after 13.11.9d); line 1 reads दान- where the CE has snāna-; recension variant, kept.

Verse 12 (13.32.12)

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition: Wikisource prints only the last line of this verse, labelled 13-32-13f (lines a–e lost; the input had the lone line). Lines 1–5 are CE star passage *0061_01-05 (printed after 13.11.10d: svadharmaśīleṣu ca dharmavitsu / vṛddhopasevānirate ca dānte / kṛtātmani kṣāntipare samarthe / kṣāntāsu dāntāsu tathābalāsu / satyasvabhāvārjavasaṃyutāsu). A woman who scatters her household vessels, who acts without looking ahead, who always speaks against her husband, who loves to be in other people's houses and is shameless: such a woman I avoid.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition: Wikisource prints only the first two lines (13-32-14a, b), a four-line verse cut short; lines 3–4 are restored from CE 13.11.11c (parasya veśmābhiratām alajjām / evaṃvidhāṃ strīṃ parivarjayāmi). Lines 1–2 = CE 13.11.11a.

A fickle, unskilled, arrogant woman, devoid of cleanliness, fond of quarrels, overcome with sleep and always lying down: such a woman I shun.

Note on the text: Corrected शयाना- । मेवंविधां → शयानाम् । एवंविधां (misprint in Wikisource; the word was broken across the line end in Wikisource; CE śayānām / evaṃvidhāṃ). Note on the text: Corrected सिम्हासने → सिंहासने (misprint in Wikisource; सिम्ह is not a Sanskrit word; CE siṃhāsane). Lines = CE 13.11.16e (two pādas); the page prints them as a verse of their own. Line 2 reads सत्पुरुषेषु नित्यम् where the CE has satpuruṣe ca nityam; recension variant, kept.

Verse 21 (13.32.21)
