King Vrishadarbha and the Hawk

Yudhishthira asks what fruit comes to those who protect beings who seek refuge. Bhishma tells how a dove, pursued by a hawk, fled to King Vrishadarbha (Ushinara) of Kashi. The king refused to give it up and offered the hawk other food, but the hawk demanded the king's own flesh, equal in weight to the dove. The king cut off his flesh piece by piece and finally climbed onto the scale himself. The gods honoured him and he rose to heaven; Bhishma tells Yudhishthira to protect those who seek refuge in the same way and names the fruit of hearing the story.
