The Price of Chyavana: A Cow

King Nahusha comes with his ministers and priest and offers to pay the fishermen a price for Chyavana. The sage rejects a thousand, a hundred thousand, a crore, and half the kingdom, until the forest sage Gavijata advises that a cow is the right price, since Brahmins and cows are priceless. Chyavana accepts a cow, praises the greatness of cows, and takes the fishermen’s cow in gift; the fishermen and the fish rise to heaven, and the two sages grant Nahusha boons.

nahuṣastu tataḥ śrutvā cyavanaṃ taṃ tathā''gatam | tvaritaḥ prayayau tatra sahāmātyapurohitaḥ

Hearing that Chyavana had come in this way, Nahusha went there in haste, with his ministers and his priest.

Note on the text: Corrected तत्रि → तत्र (misprint in Wikisource; a stray vowel sign; the critical edition reads “tatra”).

Verse 2 (13.86.2)

शौचं कृत्वा यथान्यायं प्राञ्जलिः प्रयतो नृपः । आत्मानमाचचक्षे च च्यवनाय महात्मने ॥

śaucaṃ kṛtvā yathānyāyaṃ prāñjaliḥ prayato nṛpaḥ | ātmānamācacakṣe ca cyavanāya mahātmane

The king, having purified himself as is proper, with joined palms and self-controlled, made himself known to the great-souled Chyavana.

Verse 3 (13.86.3)

And that king’s priest honoured him, true to his vow, the great soul, godlike, O lord of the people.

What can I do that is dear to you? Tell me that, best of Brahmins. I shall do everything, O Blessed One, even if it is very hard.

śrameṇa mahatā yuktāḥ kaivartā matsyajīvinaḥ | mama mūlyaṃ prayacchaibhyo matsyānāṃ vikrayaiḥ saha

These fishermen, who live by fish, are weighed down with great toil. Pay them my price, together with the price of the fish they would sell.

sahasraṃ dīyatāṃ mūlyaṃ niṣādebhyaḥ purohita | niṣkrayārthe bhagavato yathā''ha bhṛgunandanaḥ

Priest, let a price of a thousand be given to the Nishadas as the ransom of the Blessed One, as the delight of Bhrigu has said.

Verse 7 (13.86.7)

आत्ममूल्यं च वक्तव्यं न तल्लोकः प्रशंसति । तस्मादहं प्रवक्ष्यामि न चात्मस्तुतिम्मवृतः ॥

ātmamūlyaṃ ca vaktavyaṃ na tallokaḥ praśaṃsati | tasmādahaṃ pravakṣyāmi na cātmastutimmavṛtaḥ

A man should not name his own price; the world does not approve of it. Therefore I shall speak, but not in self-praise.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (vulgate only; no star or Appendix I passage in CE 13.51 carries it). The last words “na cātmastutimmavṛtaḥ” (न चात्मस्तुतिम्मवृतः) look corrupt in the base text; left as printed and translated by the evident sense.

Verse 8 (13.86.8)

सहस्रं नाहमर्हामि किं वा त्वं मन्यसे नृप । सदृशं दीयतां मूल्यं स्वबुद्ध्या निश्चयं कुरु ॥

sahasraṃ nāhamarhāmi kiṃ vā tvaṃ manyase nṛpa | sadṛśaṃ dīyatāṃ mūlyaṃ svabuddhyā niścayaṃ kuru

I am not worth a thousand. Or what do you think, O king? Let a fitting price be given; decide by your own judgement.

ardhaṃ rājyaṃ samagraṃ vā niṣādebhyaḥ pradīyatām | etattulyamahaṃ manye kiṃ vā'nyanmanyase dvija

Let half my kingdom, or the whole of it, be given to the Nishadas. I think that is an equal price; or what else do you think, twice-born?

tatra tvanyo vanacaraḥ kaścinmūlaphalāśanaḥ | nahuṣasya samīpastho gavijāto'bhavanmuniḥ

Then another, a forest-dweller living on roots and fruits, a sage born of a cow, was standing near Nahusha.

Verse 17 (13.86.17)

Note on the text: Corrected क्षिप्तं → विप्रं (misprint in Wikisource; a misread word, giving “thrown” for “Brahmin”; the critical edition reads “vipram”). The verse combines narration (line 1) with the opening of Gavijata’s speech (line 2); the speaker is kept as the narrator.

Verse 51 (13.86.51)

महाभाग्यं गवां चैव तथा धर्मविनिश्चयम् । किं भूयः कथ्यतां वीर किं ते हृदि विवक्षितम् ॥

mahābhāgyaṃ gavāṃ caiva tathā dharmaviniścayam | kiṃ bhūyaḥ kathyatāṃ vīra kiṃ te hṛdi vivakṣitam

And I have told you the greatness of cows, and the settled dharma. What more shall be told, hero? What is it that you wish to say?

Note on the text: Corrected तता → तथा (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped aspirate; the critical edition reads “tathā”).
