The Pandavas Leave for the Forest
Janamejaya asks Vaishampayana how the Pandavas and Draupadi lived through their twelve years in the forest. Vaishampayana tells how they left Hastinapura heading north, and how the grieving citizens, condemning Duryodhana and praising the value of good company, begged to go with them. Yudhishthira asks them to go back and care for Bhishma, Dhritarashtra, Vidura and Kunti; the citizens return in tears, and the Pandavas spend the night by the great banyan Pramana on the Ganga, attended by Brahmins who console the king.

Then, O Bharata, those tigers among men, mounted on their chariots, saw on the bank of the Jahnavi the great banyan called Pramana.

Our whole family is as good as gone, and so are we and our homes, where the wicked Duryodhana, guarded by the son of Subala and backed by Karna, Duhshasana and the rest, means to rule this kingdom.
Note on the text: Restored missing word spaces

na tatkulaṃ na cācāro na dharmo'rthaḥ kutaḥ sukham | yatra pāpasahāyo'yaṃ pāpo rājyaṃ cikīrṣati
Where this wicked man, with wicked men to help him, means to rule, there is no family, no right conduct, no dharma, no wealth; how then could there be happiness?
Verse 16 (3.1.16)
duryodhano gurudveṣī tyaktadharmaḥ priyānṛtaḥ | arthalubdho'bhimānī ca nīcaḥ prakṛtinirghṛṇaḥ
Duryodhana hates his elders; he has cast off dharma and loves falsehood. He is greedy for wealth, proud, base, and pitiless by nature.
Note on the text: Corrected अर्तलुब्धो → अर्थलुब्धो (misprint in Wikisource; the critical edition reads arthalubdho). Its tyaktācārasuhṛjjanaḥ for त्यक्तधर्मः प्रियानृतः is a recension variant and is kept.

śrūyatāṃ cābhidhāsyāmo guṇadoṣānnararṣabhāḥ | śubhāśubhādhivāsena saṃsargaḥ kurute yathā
Listen, O bulls among men, and we will tell you of the virtues and faults that company brings, how association works its influence through good or bad surroundings.
Verse 24 (3.1.24)
vastramāpastilānbhūmiṃ gandho vāsayate yathā | puṣpāṇāmadhivāsena tathā saṃsargajā guṇāḥ
Just as fragrance, through contact with flowers, perfumes cloth, water, sesame seeds and the earth, so qualities are born of association.
Verse 25 (3.1.25)
mohajālasya yonirhi mūḍhaireva samāgamaḥ | ahanyahani dharmasya yoniḥ sādhusamāgamaḥ
The company of fools is the very source of the net of delusion; the company of the good is, day after day, the source of dharma.
Verse 26 (3.1.26)
tasmātprājñaiśca vṛddhaiśca susvabhāvaistapasvibhiḥ | sadbhiśca saha saṃsargaḥ kāryaḥ śamaparāyaṇaiḥ
Therefore one should keep company with the wise, the elders, those of good nature, ascetics, and the virtuous who are given to tranquillity.
Verse 27 (3.1.27)

yeṣāṃ trīṇyavadātāni vidyā yoniśca karma ca | te sevyāstaiḥ samāsyāhi śāstrebhyo'pi garīyasī
Those in whom three things are pure, learning, birth and conduct, should be served; their company is weightier even than the scriptures.
Note on the text: Corrected शास्त्रेभ्योपि → शास्त्रेभ्योऽपि (missing avagraha; the critical edition reads śāstrebhyo 'pi).
Verse 28 (3.1.28)
nirārambhā hyapi vayaṃ puṇyaśīleṣu sādhuṣu | puṇyamevāpnuyāmeha pāpaṃ pāpopasevanāt
Even without performing rites ourselves, we would gain merit here by living among the good whose nature is virtuous, just as sin comes from attending on the sinful.
Verse 29 (3.1.29)
asatāṃ darśanātsparśātsaṃjalpācca sahāsanāt | dharmācārāḥ prahīyante siddhyanti ca na mānavāḥ
By seeing, touching, talking and sitting with the wicked, people lose their dharma and right conduct, and they do not reach fulfilment.
Note on the text: Corrected सहासवात् → सहासनात् (misprint in Wikisource, व for न; "sitting together", as the critical edition's saṃjalpanasahāsanāt).
Verse 30 (3.1.30)

buddhiśca hīyate puṃsāṃ nīcaiḥ saha samāgamāt | madhyamairmadhyatāṃ yāti śreṣṭhaiḥ śreṣṭhatvamāpnuyuḥ
A man's understanding declines through keeping company with the base; with the middling it becomes middling, and with the best, men attain the best.
Verse 31 (3.1.31)

Not among the base, nor among strangers, and least of all among the unrighteous, are found the virtues praised in the world: virtues that give rise to dharma, pleasure and wealth, that spring from the ways of the world, that are taught in the Veda and approved by the cultured.
Note on the text: The first line is not in the critical edition's text (its apparatus has it as 3.1.28d*0005); the other two lines match CE 3.1.29.

Note on the text: Corrected श्रेयोभिकाङ्क्षिणः → श्रेयोऽभिकाङ्क्षिणः (missing avagraha; the critical edition reads śreyo 'bhikāṅkṣiṇaḥ).
