Yudhishthira Asks About the Greatness of Devoted Wives
Yudhishthira asks Markandeya to describe the greatness of women devoted to their husbands, marvelling at how hard their service is and at what mothers and fathers endure in bearing and raising children. Markandeya answers that parents obtain sons through great effort and hope for their fame and righteousness, and that the son who fulfils those hopes knows dharma. A wife, he says, needs no sacrifice, ancestral rite or fast: by serving her husband she wins heaven. He then begins to set out the dharma of devoted wives.
