The Hunter on the Conduct of the Cultured

Kaushika asks the righteous hunter how to recognise the conduct of the cultured and what its five purifiers are. The hunter names them as sacrifice, giving, austerity, the Vedas and truth, and describes the cultured: masters of desire and anger, truthful, non-violent, generous, devoted to their elders and to scripture. He teaches that dharma has three sources, the Veda, the treatises on dharma and the practice of the cultured, and that such people cross the river of the senses by the boat of steadfastness and win heaven.

Which are the five purifiers ever present in the conduct of the cultured? This I wish to hear, blessings on you, best of those who uphold dharma. Tell it to me truly, wise hunter."

Note on the text: Removed the backtick and quote marks around the first line (Wikisource's marks for an added line). Speaker: the brahmin's question, filling the whole verse (no heading in Wikisource). The first two lines are not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension; its apparatus gives them as 3.198.56*1017 and 3.198.56*1016); the third is CE 3.198.56ef, which reads etan mahāmate vyādha prabravīhi.
