Angiras Takes the Place of Agni

Yudhishthira asks Markandeya how Agni went away into the forest, how the sage Angiras carried the oblations in his place, why the one fire appears as many, and how Kumara was born. Markandeya relates that while Agni, angered, practised austerities in the forest, Angiras blazed so fiercely that he became the fire of the world; Agni, fearing his fire-nature lost, approached him, and though Angiras urged him to resume his place, Agni insisted that Angiras be the first fire. Angiras asks to be made Agni's first son; Agni agrees, Angiras's son Brihaspati is born, the gods accept Angiras's word, and Markandeya begins his account of the many fires.
