Duryodhana Tells Karna the Truth
Duryodhana tells Karna that he did not defeat the gandharvas. He and his brothers fought them long, but once the gandharvas took to the sky and fought with illusion they were beaten, bound and carried off with their wives and servants. Some of his soldiers and ministers ran to the Pandavas for help; Yudhishthira sent his brothers, who first asked for the captives' release and, when refused, attacked; and when Arjuna had covered the sky with arrows, Chitrasena revealed himself as his friend and the gandharvas and Pandavas met in friendship.

ajānataste rādheya nābhyasūyāmyahaṃ vacaḥ | jānāsi tvaṃ jitāñśatrūngandharvāṃstejasā mayā

taṃ mokṣayata bhadraṃ vaḥ sahadāraṃ narādhipam | parāmarśo mā bhaviṣyatkurudāreṣu sarvaśaḥ | ityabruvanraṇānmuktā dharmarājamupāgatāḥ
Free the lord of men together with his wives, bless you, so that no outrage may be done to the Kuru women anywhere." So they spoke, having escaped from the battle and come to the King of Dharma.
