The Gods Are Born as Monkeys and Bears
Oppressed by Ravana, the seers and perfected ones, led by Agni, take refuge with Brahma. Brahma tells them that Vishnu has already descended to destroy Ravana, and he bids Indra and the gods beget sons on she-monkeys and she-bears to be Vishnu's allies; the gods, gandharvas and others bring forth mighty monkey and bear warriors like themselves. Brahma also sends the gandharvi Dundubhi to be born on earth as the hunchback Manthara, who goes about stirring up enmity.
