Maricha's Deception and the Abduction of Sita
Maricha receives Ravana, warns him against provoking Rama, and gives in only when Ravana threatens him with death. Taking the form of a jewelled deer, he draws Rama far from the hermitage and, struck down, cries out in Rama's voice; Sita, suspecting Lakshmana, drives him away with harsh words. Ravana then comes as an ascetic, reveals himself and courts Sita, and when she scornfully refuses him he seizes her by the hair and rises into the sky, where the vulture Jatayu sees her.
