Aranyaka (Vana) Parva · Adhyaya 315
The Yaksha Reveals Himself as Dharma
The four brothers rise from death, their hunger and thirst gone, and Yudhishthira asks the being in the lake who he really is. The Yaksha reveals himself as Dharma, Yudhishthira's own father, who had carried off the brahmin's fire-sticks in the form of a deer to test him, and he grants three boons: that the brahmin's fires will not lapse, that the Pandavas will pass the thirteenth year unrecognized in the city of Virata in whatever forms they choose, and that Yudhishthira will always conquer greed, delusion and anger and keep his mind on giving, austerity and truth. The brothers return the fire-sticks to the brahmin, and the Aranyaka Parva closes with the merit of reading this story.
