Arjuna Sets Out to Win Indra's Weapons
Remembering Vyasa's counsel, Yudhishthira tells Arjuna that the Kauravas' teachers command the whole science of arms, teaches him the secret lore Vyasa had given, and sends him north to win the divine weapons from Indra. Brahmins, Siddhas, his brothers and Draupadi bless him; the twins recall Indra's promise, and Draupadi, recalling her humiliation in the assembly, prays for his safe return. Arjuna crosses the Himalaya and Gandhamadana to Indrakila, where Indra, disguised as an ascetic, tests his resolve and promises him the weapons once he has seen Shiva.

vivikte viditaprajñamarjunaṃ puruṣarṣabha | sāntvapūrvaṃ smitaṃ kṛtvā pāṇinā parisaṃspṛśan
In private, O bull among men, he smiled and, gently touching him with his hand, spoke kindly to Arjuna, whose wisdom was well known.

All of them have been won over by Dhritarashtra's son; he has given them their share and they are content, and he treats them as his teachers. Toward all his warriors, too, his goodwill never fails.
Note on the text: Three-line verse: the first two lines are the critical edition's 3.38.6, the third its 3.38.7ab (प्रीतिः for vṛttiḥ is a recension variant and is kept).

Note on the text: Corrected व्यवहरन्न्युत → व्यवहरन्त्युत (misprint in Wikisource; न्न्य for न्त्य, the verb "they strive"; the critical edition's apparatus reads vyavaharanty uta). The first line is not in the critical edition's constituted text (its apparatus has it as 3.38.7b*0141); the second line is 3.38.7cd.

Wikisource labels this verse's lines 8a, 8b and 9b and has no verse 9; nothing is missing from the sense.

For all the divine weapons are with Indra, Dhananjaya; long ago the gods, in fear of Vritra, entrusted their strength to Shakra.
Note on the text: Corrected इनद्रे → इन्द्रे (misprint in Wikisource; a broken conjunct, the critical edition reads indre). This verse is the critical edition's 3.38.11ef + 3.38.12ab; the second line's word order and शक्रे for indre are recension variants.

In armour, with his hand-guard on and his lizard-skin finger-guards bound, the mighty-armed one made offering into the fire and, giving the Brahmins gold coins, had them pronounce blessings.
Note on the text: Corrected हत्वाऽग्निं → हुत्वाऽग्निं and मह्यभुज → महाभुजः (misprints in Wikisource; "having made offering into the fire", not "having slain the fire", and the nominative "the mighty-armed one"; the critical edition reads hutvāgniṃ … mahābhujaḥ).

tacchrutvā sarvato dṛṣṭiṃ cārayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ | athāpaśyatsavyasācī vṛkṣamūle tapasvinam
Hearing it, the Pandava cast his gaze all around, and the left-handed archer saw an ascetic at the foot of a tree,
Note on the text: Corrected रपाण्डवः → पाण्डवः (misprint in Wikisource; a stray र). The first line is not in the critical edition's constituted text (its apparatus has it as 3.38.30d*0158); the second answers to 3.38.31ab (अथापश्यत् for tato 'paśyat is a recension variant).
