Dhritarashtra's Dread and the Vows in the Forest

Troubled by what he has heard of the Pandavas, Dhritarashtra tells Sanjaya that he finds no peace, and foresees his army destroyed by the twins, Bhima and Arjuna, and the Vrishnis led by Krishna. Sanjaya blames him for not restraining Duryodhana and reports what a spy learned in the Kamyaka forest: Krishna, angered, vowed to kill Duryodhana and his allies and win back Yudhishthira's lost fortune, but Yudhishthira asked him to wait until the thirteen years were over, and Dhrishtadyumna and the other heroes promised Draupadi vengeance. Dhritarashtra concludes that Vidura's warning at the dicing will come true.

Verse 1 (3.48.1)

teṣāṃ taccaritaṃ śrutvā manuṣyātītamadbhutam | cintāśokaparītātmā manyunābhipariplutaḥ

Hearing of their deeds, wondrous and beyond what men can do, Dhritarashtra was overcome by anxiety and grief and flooded with distress.

dīrghamuṣṇaṃ ca niḥśvasya dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ | abravītsaṃjayaṃ sūtamāmantrya bharatarṣabha

Sighing long and hot, Dhritarashtra, Ambika's son, called Sanjaya the charioteer to him and spoke, O bull of the Bharatas.

Verse 3 (3.48.3)

na rātrau na divā sūta śāntiṃ prāpnomi vai kṣaṇam | saṃcintya durṇayaṃ ghoramatītaṃ dyūtajaṃ hi tat

Charioteer, neither by night nor by day do I find peace for a single moment when I think on that dreadful wrong of the past, born of the dice game,

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension); with the next verse it appears in the critical edition's apparatus as 3.48.1d*199. Restored a missing word space Wikisource prints no new speaker heading, but from here to verse 13 Dhritarashtra speaks to Sanjaya in the first person (introduced by the previous verse), so these verses are given to him rather than to Vaishampayana.

Verse 4 (3.48.4)

teṣāmasahyavīryāṇāṃ śauryaṃ dhairyaṃ dhṛtiṃ parām | anyonyamanurāgaṃ ca bhrātṝṇāmatimānuṣam

and on the courage, the steadiness and the supreme resolve of those brothers of unbearable valour, and on their more than human love for one another.

Verse 5 (3.48.5)

devaputrau mahābhāgau devarājasamadyutī | nakulaḥ sahadevaśca pāṇḍavau yuddhadurmadau

The two sons of the gods, the illustrious Nakula and Sahadeva, sons of Pandu, splendid as the king of the gods, are fierce in battle,

Verse 6 (3.48.6)

dṛḍhāyudhau dūrapātau yuddhe ca kṛtaniścayau | śīghrahastau dṛḍhakrodhau nityayuktau rathe sthitau

firm of weapon, striking from afar, resolute in battle, quick of hand, steadfast in anger, ever ready, standing firm in their chariots.

Verse 7 (3.48.7)

bhīmārjunau purodhāya yadā tau raṇamūrdhani | sthāsyete siṃhavikrāntāvaśvināviva duḥsahau | niḥśeṣamiha paśyāmi mama sainyasya saṃjaya

When those two, with the valour of lions and as irresistible as the Ashvins, take their stand at the head of the battle with Bhima and Arjuna before them, I see nothing left of my army here, Sanjaya.

Note on the text: Merged Wikisource verses 7 and 8: Wikisource numbers the single closing line (its 8a) as a verse of its own, but it completes the sentence of verse 7, and the critical edition has the three lines as one verse, 3.48.4 (reading na śeṣam … tadā sainyasya, a recension variant of the third line).

Verse 8 (3.48.8)

tau hyapratirathau yuddhe devaputrau mahārathau | draupadyāstaṃ parikleśaṃ na kṣaṃsyete'tyamarṣiṇau

Those two, unmatched in battle, sons of the gods, great chariot-warriors, fiercely resentful, will never forgive that torment of Draupadi.

Verse 9 (3.48.9)

The Vrishnis too, great archers, and the mighty Panchalas; and the Parthas, guarded in battle by Vasudeva, who is true to his word, will burn up my sons' army in the fight.

Verse 10 (3.48.10)

Son of a charioteer, the onrush of the Vrishnis led by Rama and Krishna cannot be withstood; even mountains could not bear it.

Verse 11 (3.48.11)

teṣāṃ madhye maheṣvāso bhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ | śaikyayā vīraghātinyā gadayā vicariṣyati

In their midst the great archer Bhima, of terrible prowess, will range about with his hero-slaying mace, carried in its sling.

Verse 12 (3.48.12)

tathā gāṇḍīvanirghoṣaṃ visphūrjitamivāśaneḥ | gadāvegaṃ ca bhīmasya nālaṃ soḍhuṃ narādhipāḥ

The twang of the Gandiva, like the crash of a thunderbolt, and the force of Bhima's mace: no kings will be able to bear them.

Verse 13 (3.48.13)

Then I, who followed Duryodhana's will, shall remember the words of my friends, words worth remembering, which I did not heed before.

vyatikramo'yaṃ sumahāṃstvayā rājannupekṣitaḥ | samarthenāpi yanmohātputraste na nivāritaḥ

This great transgression you let pass, O king: though you had the power, in your delusion you did not restrain your son.

Verse 15 (3.48.15)

śrutvā'yaṃ nirjitāndyūte pāṇḍavānmadhusūdanaḥ | tvaritaḥ kāmyake pārthānsamabhāvayadacyutaḥ

When Madhusudana heard that the Pandavas had been beaten at dice, Achyuta hastened to the Kamyaka forest to see the Parthas and do them honour.

Note on the text: Corrected कामय्के → काम्यके (misprint in Wikisource; the forest is the Kamyaka, as in the critical edition's kāmyake).

Verse 16 (3.48.16)

drupadasya tathā putrā dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamāḥ | virāṭo dhṛṣṭaketuśca kekayāśca mahārathāḥ

So too did the sons of Drupada, led by Dhrishtadyumna, and Virata, Dhrishtaketu, and the Kekayas, great chariot-warriors.

Verse 17 (3.48.17)

taiśca yatkathitaṃ rājandṛṣṭvā pārthānparājitān | cāreṇa viditaṃ sarvaṃ tanmayā veditaṃ ca te

When Madhusudana met the Pandavas there and they chose him to be Phalguna's charioteer in battle, Hari said to them, "So be it."

Verse 19 (3.48.19)

amarṣito hi kṛṣṇopi dṛṣṭvā pārthāṃstadā gatān | kṛṣṇājinottarāsaṅgānabravīcca yudhiṣṭhiram

Krishna too was angered when he saw the Parthas gone into exile, wearing black deerskins as their upper garments, and he spoke to Yudhishthira:

वासुदेव उवाच · Vasudeva (Krishna) said

Verse 20 (3.48.20)

yā sā samṛddhiḥ pārthānāmindraprasthe babhūva ha | rājasūye mayā dṛṣṭā nṛpairanyaiḥ sudurlabhā

That prosperity of the Parthas which there was in Indraprastha, which I saw at the Rajasuya, so hard for other kings to attain;

Note on the text: Krishna's words to Yudhishthira, quoted by Sanjaya, run from here to verse 29; they fill whole verses, so they are given to Krishna rather than to Sanjaya.

Verse 21 (3.48.21)

Note on the text: Restored a missing word space आन्ध्रकान् is a recension variant of the critical edition's andhakān and is kept.

the Kekayas, the Malavas and the people of Kashmir: all these I saw summoned to your sacrifice as servers of the food.

Note on the text: The first line is not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension), where 3.48.22 opens with ete cānye ca bahavo ye ca te bharatarṣabha; the second line corresponds to 3.48.22cd (the critical edition reads āgatān for आहूतान्).

Note on the text: Corrected भीमार्जुनवयैस्तथा → भीमार्जुनयमैस्तथा (misprint in Wikisource; वयैः is no word here, the list needs यमैः, "the twins", as in the critical edition's bhīmārjunayamais). The critical edition joins this verse and the first line of the next as one three-line verse, 3.48.24.

Verse 28 (3.48.28)

with the hero Dhrishtadyumna and the son of Shishupala, I will swiftly kill in battle Duryodhana and Karna, O Bharata, Duhshasana, Saubala, and whoever else fights against us.

Note on the text: Three-line verse: its first line is the last line of the critical edition's 3.48.24, its other two lines are 3.48.25.

Verse 29 (3.48.29)

manye yathā tadbhaviteti sūta | yathā kṣattā prāha vacaḥ purā mām | asaṃśayaṃ bhavitā yuddhameta- | dgate kāle pāṇḍavānāṃ yathoktam
