Narada and Devamata on the Breaths
The Brahmin recalls the conversation of the sage Narada and Devamata about which of the five breaths comes first when a creature is conceived. Narada traces Prana and Apana to the semen and blood, and Vyana and Samana to the common substance, then describes the breaths as the offerings of an inner sacrifice, with Udana as the fire between the pairs, such as day and night, truth and untruth, good and evil.
