Alarka Shoots Arrows at the Senses

The forefathers continue their counsel to Rama with the story of the royal sage Alarka. Having conquered the earth, he decides to turn his arrows against the mind and each of the senses in turn, but each replies that the arrows will only wound himself. Finding no weapon in austerity, he turns to yoga, quickly subdues the senses with a single arrow, and attains perfection, declaring that there is no happiness higher than yoga. The forefathers urge Rama to give up killing Kshatriyas, and he takes to severe austerity.
