The Brahmin Declares the Self Beyond the Body

The Brahmin tells his wife that he is not what her eyes and reasoning take him to be: he is the self that pervades the whole world and ends all creatures, as fire ends wood. For him understanding alone is wealth. There is one path for all Brahmins, in every stage of life, reached by understanding and not by the body, which is only the bond of action. Therefore she need have no fear of the next world, and, devoted to that state, she will reach his very self.

Verse 1 (14.34.1)

nāhaṃ tathā bhīru carāmi loke | yathā tvaṃ māṃ tarkayase svabuddhyā | vipro'smi mukto'smi vanecaro'smi | gṛhasthadharmā vratavāṃstathā'smi

The Brahmin said: I do not move about in the world, timid one, as you conceive of me by your own reasoning. I am a Brahmin, I am liberated, I am a forest-dweller; and I am also one who keeps the householder's duty and holds to vows.

Note on the text: Corrected भूरु → भीरु, तर्जयसे → तर्कयसे, and विप्रोस्मिं मुक्तोस्मि वनेचरोस्मि → विप्रोऽस्मि मुक्तोऽस्मि वनेचरोऽस्मि (misprints in Wikisource: ऊ for ई, ज for क, a stray anusvara and dropped avagraha; CE bhīru, tarkayase, vipro 'smi mukto 'smi vanecaro 'smi). Line 4 (व्रतवांस्तथाऽस्मि) is a recension variant of CE brahmacārī tathāsmi, kept.

Verse 2 (14.34.2)

nāhamasmi yathā māṃ tvaṃ paśyase cakṣuṣā śubhe | mayā vyāptamidaṃ sarvaṃ yatkiñcijjagatīgatam

I am not as you see me with your eyes, O fair one. This whole world, whatever exists on earth, is pervaded by me.

Note on the text: Corrected यता मां त्वं पश्यसे च शुभाशुभे → यथा मां त्वं पश्यसे चक्षुषा शुभे (misprint in Wikisource: यता for यथा, and च शुभाशुभे, which does not construe, for the CE reading चक्षुषा शुभे; CE yathā māṃ tvaṃ paśyase cakṣuṣā śubhe).

Verse 3 (14.34.3)

ye kecijjantavo loke jaṅgamāḥ sthāvarāśca ha | teṣāṃ māmantakaṃ viddhi dārūṇāmiva pāvakam

Of all creatures in the world, moving and unmoving, know me to be the ender, as fire is of logs of wood.

Note on the text: Corrected दारुणामिव → दारूणामिव (misprint in Wikisource: short उ for long ऊ in the genitive plural of दारु; CE dārūṇām iva).

Verse 4 (14.34.4)

rājye pṛthivyāṃ sarvasyāmathavāpi triviṣṭape | tathā buddhiriyaṃ vetti buddhireva dhanaṃ mama

Whether in the kingdom over the whole earth or even in heaven, this understanding of mine knows it so: understanding alone is my wealth.

Verse 5 (14.34.5)

ekaḥ panthā brāhmaṇānāṃ yena gacchanti tadvidaḥ | gṛheṣu vanavāseṣu guruvāseṣu bhikṣuṣu

There is one path for Brahmins, by which those who know it go, whether in households, in forest dwellings, in teachers' houses or among mendicants.

Note on the text: Verses 5-7 follow the CE's three-line verses, which the alignment left unmatched: verse 5 = CE 14.33.5a, 5c; line 1 of verse 6 = 14.33.5e; line 2 of verse 6 = 14.33.6a; line 1 of verse 7 = 14.33.6c; line 2 of verse 7 = 14.33.7a; line 3 = 14.33.7c.

Verse 6 (14.34.6)

liṅgairbahubhiravyagrairekā buddhirupāsyate | nānāliṅgāśramasthānāṃ yeṣāṃ buddhiḥ śamātmikā

Through many outward marks, undisturbed, one single understanding is followed. Those who dwell in the various marks and stages of life, whose understanding is of the nature of peace,

Note on the text: Line 1 = CE 14.33.5e; line 2 = CE 14.33.6a (see verse 5).

Verse 7 (14.34.7)

te bhāvamekamāyānti saritaḥ sāgaraṃ yathā | buddhyā'yaṃ gamyate mārgaḥ śarīreṇa na gamyate | ādyantavanti karmāṇi śarīraṃ karmabandhanam

they reach the one state, as rivers reach the sea. This path is travelled by understanding, not by the body; actions have a beginning and an end, and the body is the bondage of action.

Note on the text: Three-line verse, as on the page (labelled 34-7a/b/c): line 1 = CE 14.33.6c, line 2 = CE 14.33.7a, line 3 = CE 14.33.7c (see verse 5). Corrected शरीरेणि → शरीरेण (misprint in Wikisource: stray ि; CE śarīreṇa).

Verse 8 (14.34.8)

tasmānme subhage nāsti paralokakṛtaṃ bhayam | tadbhāvabhāvaniratā mamaivātmānameṣyasi

Therefore, fortunate one, there is for me no fear created by the world beyond. Devoted to the cultivation of that state, you will reach my very self.
