Bhishma Parva · Adhyaya 1

The Armies Encamp at Kurukshetra and Agree on the Rules of War

Bhishma Parva opens with Janamejaya asking how the Kurus, Pandavas and Somakas fought, and Vaishampayana begins the account. The Pandavas encamp west of Samantapanchaka facing east, Yudhishthira provisions the host and gives it watchwords and badges, and armies drawn from all of Jambudvipa leave the earth empty but for children and the old. Duryodhana arrays his forces, conches blare, dust and a rain of flesh and blood fall as omens, and the two sides agree on the rules of fair combat before settling in their camps.
