The Pandavas Form the Vajra Array

Dhritarashtra asks how Yudhishthira, with his smaller army, answered Bhishma's array. Sanjaya relates that Yudhishthira, recalling Brihaspati's rule that a small force should fight closely massed, asked Arjuna to form the array, and Arjuna set out the invincible Vajra array of Indra with Bhima at its head. Sanjaya describes the stations of the Pandava warriors, Arjuna's monkey banner towering over all, and Bhima leading the host mace in hand, and then the dire omens at sunrise — a wind with thunder from a cloudless sky, whirlwinds of dust, a meteor striking the sun, and the earth quaking.

Seeing the eleven akshauhinis drawn up in array, how did Yudhishthira the Pandava form a counter-array with his small army?

Note on the text: Corrected प्रत्ययूहत → प्रत्यव्यूहत (misprint in Wikisource; the akshara व्य dropped, as verse 1 shows; the critical edition reads pratyavyūhata).
