Bhishma Parva · Adhyaya 70

The Carnage of the Fifth Morning

Through the forenoon of the fifth day Bhishma fights furiously to shield the Kauravas from Bhima, and the battle of kings grows into a general slaughter. Sanjaya describes the din of elephants, horses, drums and conches, heads falling like a rain of stones, the earth strewn with limbs and ornaments, riderless horses and goad-free elephants running wild, and warriors fighting hand to hand. At the end Duryodhana, with the Kalingas, advances behind Bhishma, and the Pandavas, gathered round Bhima, rush against him.
