Dhritarashtra Laments His Army

Hearing of the sixth day's slaughter, Dhritarashtra breaks in on Sanjaya's report. He describes at length how well his army was chosen, trained, armed, paid and led, a host like the ocean guarded by Drona, Bhishma and the other great warriors, and cannot understand how such a force fails to kill the Pandavas. He concludes that the gods must be fighting for them, recalls that Vidura's good counsel was rejected by his foolish son, and resigns himself to what the Creator ordained long ago.

tathyāṃ manye matiṃ tasya sarvajñasya mahātmanaḥ | āsīttathā''gataṃ tāta yena dṛṣṭamidaṃ purā

I think that the judgement of that all-knowing, great-souled man was true; it has come to pass just as he foresaw it long ago, my son.

Verse 26 (6.76.26)

Or else, Sanjaya, this was bound to happen so in every way; as the Creator ordained it long ago, so it is, and not otherwise.
