Ghatotkacha Holds Off the Kaurava Champions

Duryodhana withstands Ghatotkacha's arrow-storm and wounds him with twenty-five shafts. The rakshasa lifts a mountain-splitting spear to kill him, but the king of the Vangas drives his elephant into its path, and the spear kills the beast; Duryodhana, though outmatched, holds his ground and shoots, and Ghatotkacha dodges and roars. Hearing him, Bhishma sends Drona and the other great warriors to the king's rescue. Unshaken, Ghatotkacha takes them all on: he cuts Drona's bow and Somadatta's banner, wounds Bahlika, Kripa, Chitrasena, Vikarna, Bhurishravas, Brihadbala and Shalya, fells the charioteers of Vivimshati and Ashvatthaman, brings down Jayadratha's banner and bow, and kills the Avanti king's horses.

Verse 1 (6.92.1)

tatastadbāṇavarṣaṃ tu duḥsahaṃ dānavairapi | dadhāra yudhi rājendro yathā varṣaṃ mahādvipaḥ

Then, in the battle, the king of kings bore that rain of arrows, hard even for the Danavas to endure, as a great elephant bears a downpour.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: checked against the raw Wikisource page (a table, one row per verse, 6-92-1 to 6-92-43, under one सञ्जय उवाच heading, ending with its colophon naming this the 92nd adhyaya, on the eighth day of battle). Page and input agree on all 43 verses; together they correspond to the critical edition 6.88.1–38 with its star passage *0350 (its *0351 is not on the page). The alignment missed the verses where Wikisource divides the critical edition's three-line verses into couplets; these were aligned by hand. The page's text is badly garbled in verses 13–19 and 26 and was corrected from the critical edition (see the notes). Verses 19–21 (Bhishma's words to Drona) carry no heading on the page and are given to Bhishma.

Verse 2 (6.92.2)

tataḥ krodhasamāviṣṭo niḥśvasanniva pannagaḥ | saṃśayaṃ paramaṃ prāptaḥ putraste bharatarṣabha

Then your son, O bull of the Bharatas, in the gravest danger, filled with anger and hissing like a serpent,

Verse 3 (6.92.3)

mumoca niśitāṃstīkṣṇānnārācānpañcaviṃśatim | te'patansahasā rājaṃstasminrākṣasapuṅgave

loosed twenty-five sharp, keen iron shafts. They fell at once, O king, upon that bull among rakshasas,

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 of the critical edition's three-line 6.88.3; its third line opens verse 4. The automatic alignment found no match.

Verse 4 (6.92.4)

āśīviṣā iva kruddhāḥ parvate gandhamādane | sa tairviddhaḥ sravanraktaṃ prabhinna iva kuñjaraḥ

like angry venomous serpents falling on Mount Gandhamadana. Pierced by them and streaming blood like an elephant in rut,

With that mighty, swift-moving, foremost of elephants he blocked the road in the battle that led to Duryodhana's chariot.

Note on the text: Lines: the critical edition's 6.88.7ef + 6.88.8ab (Wikisource divides the critical edition's three-line verses here into couplets; nothing is lost). पन्थानं (critical edition rathaṃ ca) kept as a variant. The automatic alignment found no match.

Verse 10 (6.92.10)

Duryodhana too, seeing that splendid elephant fallen and his army shattered, was deeply distressed.

Note on the text: Corrected दुर्योधोऽपि → दुर्योधनोऽपि (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped न leaves the line a syllable short; critical edition duryodhano 'pi). पतितं (critical edition pātitaṃ) kept as a variant.

Verse 14 (6.92.14)

Though he could not hope to fight back, having seen the rakshasa's prowess, the king, holding to the warrior's code and his own pride, stood firm as a mountain when the moment to retreat had come.

Note on the text: Three lines. Line 1 is the critical edition's star passage 6.88.11d*0350, not in the constituted text; the page marks it off with a backtick and a closing quote mark (its sign for an interpolated line), which were removed with the extra danda the input added after them. Lines 2–3 are 6.88.12. Corrected प्राप्तेऽपक्रनये → प्राप्तेऽपक्रमणे (misprint in Wikisource; न for म and य for ण, critical edition prāpte 'pakramaṇe). चातिमानिताम् (critical edition cābhimānitām) kept as a variant. Seeing that arrow coming at him, bright as Indra's thunderbolt, the great-souled Ghatotkacha slipped clear of it by his quickness.

Note on the text: Corrected वणिम् → बाणम् (misprint in Wikisource; critical edition bāṇam). लाघवान्मोचयामास and महात्मा वै (critical edition lāghavād vañcayām āsa, mahākāyo) kept as variants.

Again he roared fiercely, his eyes red with anger, terrifying the armies like a storm-cloud at the end of an age.

Note on the text: Corrected निननादोषं → निननादोग्रं, रौन्यानि → सैन्यानि and युगन्ते → युगान्ते (misprints in Wikisource; none is a word here; critical edition nanādograḥ and yugānte, and सैन्यानि is the evident word where it reads sarvabhūtāni). भूयश्च and त्रासयामास (critical edition bhūya eva, trāsayan) kept as variants.

Note on the text: Corrected भिरिश्रवाः → भूरिश्रवाः (misprint in Wikisource; critical edition bhūriśravāḥ). The page names the king of Avanti and Brihadbala in line 2 and Chitrasena and Vivimshati in verse 24, where the critical edition has them the other way round (6.88.21cd, 22ab); the same warriors are listed, so the order is kept. बाह्लीकोऽथ (critical edition bāhlikaś ca) kept as a variant.
