Rudra Pleads with Brahma; the Birth of Death
Sthanu (Rudra) begs Brahma to stop burning the creatures he made. Brahma explains that he never wished to destroy; his anger arose when the Earth, crushed by her burden, urged him to withdraw the world. Rudra pleads again, asking for some other means, and Brahma draws his fire back into himself and ordains the ways of action and of cessation. From his senses a dark-red woman with red eyes and golden ornaments comes forth. Brahma names her Mrityu (Death) and bids her slay all creatures, wise and foolish alike; she weeps, and he catches her tears in his hands and consoles her.
