Karna Boasts and Shalya Mocks Him

Karna sets out for battle amid dreadful omens, and the Kauravas, deluded by fate, cheer him on. He tells Shalya that with Drona fallen he will fight Arjuna and either kill him or follow Drona to Yama. Shalya laughs at the boast and mocks him, recalling Arjuna's feats and Karna's earlier flights, and Karna answers angrily; then they drive on toward the Pandava host.

I do not fear even Mahendra, the thunderbolt-wielder, though he be enraged, when I stand in my chariot with my bow in hand. Even after seeing Bhishma and the others lying fallen, that steadiness of mine does not leave me.

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page: the input made each half-verse (line) its own row, so the numbers ran 1,1,2,2,…; the page's own verse-end marks (8-31-14a/b) were followed and the 2 line(s) joined. Seeing mighty kings struck down by the enemy in battle, with their charioteers, elephants and chariots, how could that great master of the mighty weapons, the preceptor, best of Brahmins, not have slain all his foes in the fight?

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page: the input made each half-verse (line) its own row, so the numbers ran 1,1,2,2,…; the page's own verse-end marks (8-31-16a/b) were followed and the 2 line(s) joined. sa saṃsmarandroṇamahaṃ mahāhave bravīmi satyaṃ kuravo nibodhata | na vo madanyaḥ prasahedraṇe'rjunaṃ samāgataṃ mṛtyumivograrūpiṇam

Remembering Drona in this great battle, I tell you the truth, Kurus; listen. No one among you but I can stand against Arjuna when he comes on in fearful shape like Death himself.

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page: the input made each half-verse (line) its own row, so the numbers ran 1,1,2,2,…; the page's own verse-end marks (8-31-17a/b) were followed and the 2 line(s) joined. śikṣā prasādaśca balaṃ dhṛtiśca droṇe mahāstrāṇi ca saṃnatiśca | sa cedagānmṛtyuvaśaṃ mahātmā sarvānanyānāturānadya manye

Skill, graciousness, strength, steadfastness, the mighty weapons and modesty all dwelt in Drona. If that great soul has gone into the power of Death, I reckon all the others helpless today.

neha dhruvaṃ kiṃcidapi pracintayan vadāmi loke karmaṇo nityayogāt | sūryodaye ko hi vimuktasaṃśayo bhāvaṃ kurvītādya gurau nipātite

Reflecting on it, I say that nothing here in the world is fixed, because the workings of action never cease. Who, at sunrise today, free of doubt, could set his heart on anything now that the preceptor has fallen?

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page: the input made each half-verse (line) its own row, so the numbers ran 1,1,2,2,…; the page's own verse-end marks (8-31-19a/b) were followed and the 2 line(s) joined. na nūnamastrāṇi balaṃ parākramaḥ kriyāḥ sunītaṃ paramāyudhāni vā | alaṃ manuṣyasya sukhāya vartituṃ tathāhi yuddhe nihataḥ parairguruḥ

Surely neither weapons, nor strength, nor valour, nor skilled action, nor sound policy, nor the finest arms are enough to bring a man happiness, for the preceptor has been slain in battle by his enemies.

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page: the input made each half-verse (line) its own row, so the numbers ran 1,1,2,2,…; the page's own verse-end marks (8-31-20a/b) were followed and the 2 line(s) joined.
