Karna Parva · Adhyaya 71
Yudhishthira Rebukes Arjuna
On hearing that Karna is unhurt, Yudhishthira, scorched by Karna's arrows, tells Arjuna that they might as well return to the forest or serve the Dhartarashtras. He reproaches Arjuna for his failed promise to kill Karna, recalls the voice from the sky that foretold Arjuna's greatness at his birth, names Bhima as his only protector and laments Ghatotkacha, and says that if Arjuna cannot face Karna he should give the Gandiva to Krishna. He closes with the bitter wish that Arjuna had never been born.

Verse 1 (8.71.1)

vaikartanaṃ kuśalinaṃ niśamya | kruddhaḥ pārthaḥ phalgunasyāmitaujāḥ | dhanañjayaṃ vākyamuvāca rājā | yudhiṣṭhiraḥ karṇaśarābhitaptaḥ
On hearing that Vaikartana was unhurt, King Yudhishthira — angered at Phalguna, a Pandava of boundless might, scorched by Karna's arrows — said these words to Dhananjaya.
Note on the text: Corrected फल्गूनस्य → फल्गुनस्य (misprint in Wikisource; long ू for short ु; CE phalgunasya). Line 1 differs from the CE (śrutvā karṇaṃ kalyam udāravīryaṃ ...); Wikisource's reading kept. Adhyaya notes: the page's colophon and heading say adhyaya 71, but its verse labels read 8-73-N (the number of a later page, which has its own, different text under 8-73-N labels); the text here is adhyaya 71's own (it follows adhyaya 70 and leads into 72), so it is not a stray copy of another adhyaya; wikisource_number is the k of the labels 8-73-k. All 34 table rows are present in the input; nothing is printed after the colophon. Speakers: the only heading is सञ्जय उवाच before this verse; verses 2-3 and 5-34 are Yudhishthira's speech (unheaded on the page), verse 4 is Sanjaya's narration.

Mounted on that splendid, monkey-bannered chariot made by Tvashtri, whose axle never creaks, holding a sword adorned with gold and Gandiva, the best of bows, tall as a palm, carried by Vasudeva — how have you fled in fear of Karna, Partha?

Note on the text: Corrected महास्त्रविन्नापि → महास्त्रविच्चापि (misprint in Wikisource; च mistyped as न; the Appendix passage reads mahāstravic cāpi). cakāra yo'sau niśi yuddhamekaḥ | tyaktvā raṇaṃ yasya bhayādravante
who alone made war by night, from fear of whom they abandon the fight and flee -
Note on the text: Restored चकार योऽसौ (the page prints five x marks for lost text) from the Appendix passage (8.48.13f@020_0039: cakāra yo 'sau niśi yuddham ekas); corrected स्त्यक्सा → त्यक्त्वा and यत्व → यस्य (misprints in Wikisource; the Appendix passage reads tyaktvā raṇaṃ yasya); and the page splits a sandhi across the line break (युद्धमेक-- । / स्त्यक्सा); written here with the word-ends resolved (युद्धमेकः । / त्यक्त्वा), the line division kept. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is part of the critical edition's Appendix I passage No. 20, inserted after 8.48.13f (8.48.13f@020_0039-0040).
Verse 29 (8.71.29)
sa cetsamāsādya mahānubhāvaḥ | karṇaṃ raṇe bāṇagaṇaiḥ pramohya | dhairye sthitenāpi ca sūtajena | śaktyā hato vāsavadattayā tayā
That mighty one, though he met Karna in battle and bewildered him with showers of arrows, was struck down by the steady-minded Suta's son with that spear given by Vasava.
Note on the text: Corrected प्रमोह्यः → प्रमोह्य (misprint in Wikisource; stray visarga on the gerund; the Appendix passage reads pramohya). Corrected शक्या हतो → शक्त्या हतो (misprint in Wikisource; the conjunct त्त्य is dropped; the Appendix passage reads śaktyā hato). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is part of the critical edition's Appendix I passage No. 20, inserted after 8.48.13f (8.48.13f@020_0041-0044).
Verse 30 (8.71.30)
mamaiva bhāgyāni purā kṛtāni | pāpāni nūnaṃ phalavanti yuddhe | tṛṇaṃ ca kṛtvā samare bhavantaṃ | tato'hamevaṃ nikṛto durātmanā | vaikartanenaiva tathā kṛto'haṃ | yathā hyaśaktaḥ kriyate tvabāndhavaḥ
Surely it is my own evil deeds of long ago that bear fruit in this battle. Making a straw of you in the fight, the evil-souled Vaikartana has so insulted me, and has so treated me, as one is treated who is powerless and friendless.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is part of the critical edition's Appendix I passage No. 20, inserted after 8.48.13f (8.48.13f@020_0045-0050). (Line 5 reads वैकर्तनेनैव where the Appendix passage has vaikartaneneha; line 6 reads त्वबान्धवः for hy abāndhavaḥ. Wikisource's readings kept.)
Verse 31 (8.71.31)
āpadgataṃ yaśca naro vimokṣayet | sa bāndhavaḥ snehayutaḥ suhṛcca | evaṃ purāṇā ṛṣayo vadanti | dharmaḥ sadā sadbhiranuṣṭhitaśca
He who delivers a man fallen into distress is his kinsman, an affectionate friend — so the ancient sages say; and dharma is always practised by the good.
Note on the text: Corrected आपद्ग्रतं → आपद्गतं (misprint in Wikisource; ग्र for ग; the Appendix passage reads āpadgatam). The page splits a sandhi across the line break (विमोक्षये-- । / त्स बान्धवः); written here with the word-ends resolved (विमोक्षयेत् । / स बान्धवः), the line division kept. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is part of the critical edition's Appendix I passage No. 20, inserted after 8.48.13f (8.48.13f@020_0051-0054).
Verse 32 (8.71.32)
Wearing a sword with a golden hilt and the best of bows, Gandiva, tall as a palm, carried by Keshava — how did you, Partha, come to set out to retreat from Karna?
Note on the text: Corrected खङ्गं → खड्गं (misprint in Wikisource; ङ्ग for ड्ग; CE khaḍgam (8.48.13c)). Corrected धनुर्वेदं → धनुर्वरं (misprint in Wikisource; the same line in verse 17 reads धनुर्वरं गाण्डिवं तालमात्रम्; धनुर्वेदं ("the science of archery") does not fit with गाण्डिवं). A doublet of verse 17 (lines 1-2 parallel CE 8.48.13c, lines 3-4 CE 8.48.13e); in this wording the verse is not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension), and it is not in the Appendix passage No. 20.
Verse 33 (8.71.33)
sa gāṇḍīvaṃ keśavāya pradāya | yantā bhavestvaṃ yadi keśavasya | tatastaretkeśavaḥ karṇamugraṃ | marutsakho vṛtramivāttavajraḥ
If you were to give Gandiva to Keshava and yourself become Keshava's charioteer, then Keshava would overcome fierce Karna as Indra, friend of the Maruts, thunderbolt in hand, overcame Vritra.
Note on the text: Corrected मरुत्सस्वो → मरुत्सखो (misprint in Wikisource; ख written as स्व; marutsakha, "friend of the Maruts", is Indra). A variant of CE 8.48.14a-c (dhanuś caitat keśavāya pradāya; yantābhaviṣyas tvaṃ raṇe ced durātman / tato 'haniṣyat keśavaḥ karṇam ugraṃ; marutpatir vṛtram ivāttavajraḥ); Wikisource's reading kept.
Verse 34 (8.71.34)
Had you fallen in the fifth month, or had you never been a child in Pritha's womb, there would have been a prince better than I, and your fame, Phalguna, would not have been lost.
Note on the text: The page splits a sandhi across the line break (राजपुत्रोऽभविष्य-- । / न्न ते); written here with the word-ends resolved (राजपुत्रोऽभविष्यन् । / न ते), the line division kept. Lines 1-2 correspond to CE 8.48.15a (māse 'patiṣyaḥ pañcame tvaṃ prakṛcchre; na vā garbho 'py abhaviṣyaḥ pṛthāyāḥ); lines 3-4 differ from CE 15c; Wikisource's reading kept.
