Arjuna Begs Pardon and Vows Karna's Death

Krishna tells Arjuna that killing his eldest brother would have sent him to a dreadful hell and urges him to appease Yudhishthira. Arjuna falls at the king's feet, and the brothers weep and embrace. Yudhishthira speaks of his humiliation at Karna's hands, and Arjuna swears by truth to kill Karna that day. Krishna has the chariot made ready and asks Yudhishthira to bless Arjuna, who receives the king's leave and good wishes.

Verse 1 (8.75.1)

iti sma kṛṣṇavacanātpratyuccārya yudhiṣṭhiram | babhūva vimanāḥ pārthaḥ kiñcitkṛtveva pātakam

Having answered Yudhishthira in this way, at Krishna's word, Partha became dejected, as though he had committed a sin.

Verse 2 (8.75.2)

tato'bravīdvāsudevaḥ prahasanniva pāṇḍavam | kathaṃ nāma bhavedetadyadi tvaṃ pārtha dharmajam

Then Vasudeva, with something like a smile, said to the Pandava: "How could this be right, Partha, if you were to strike down Dharma's son —

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: this is CE 8.50.2a and 2c. The sentence runs on into the next verse. Speaker: line 1 is the narrator's, and Vasudeva's speech begins in line 2 and continues through verse 9, so the verse stays with Sanjaya.

asinā tīkṣṇadhāreṇa hanyā dharme vyavasthitam | tvamityuktvātha rājānamevaṃ kaśmalamāviśaḥ

— who stands firm in dharma — with a sharp-edged sword, merely because you had said "you" to the king? You have fallen into such confusion.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: line 1 is CE 8.50.2e; line 2 is CE 8.50.3a (tvam ity uktvaiva rājānam evaṃ kaśmalam āviśaḥ), Wikisource reading उक्त्वाथ for uktvaiva (recension variant, kept). Corrected तीक्ष्णधारणे → तीक्ष्णधारेण (misprint in Wikisource; wrong case ending, a non-word here; the critical edition has tīkṣṇadhāreṇa) and व्यस्थितम् → व्यवस्थितम् (misprint; dropped व, which also shortens the line; the critical edition has vyavasthitam). Speaker: Vasudeva (Krishna), whose speech begins in the previous verse; no heading is printed.

Verse 4 (8.75.4)

hatvā tu nṛpatiṃ pārtha kariṣyasi kimuttaram | evaṃ hi durvido dharmo mandaprajñairviśeṣataḥ

And once you had killed the king, Partha, what answer would you then have given? Dharma is hard to discern in this way, especially for those of slow understanding.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: lines are CE 8.50.3c and 3e (hatvā tu nṛpatiṃ pārtha akariṣyaḥ kim uttaram / evaṃ sudurvido dharmo mandaprajñair viśeṣataḥ), Wikisource reading करिष्यसि and दुर्विदः for the critical edition's akariṣyaḥ and sudurvidaḥ (recension variants, kept).

Verse 5 (8.75.5)

sa bhavāndharmabhīrutvāddhruvaṃ yāyānmahattamaḥ | narakaṃ ghorarūpaṃ ca bhrāturjyeṣṭhasya vai vadhāt

Out of dread of breaking dharma, you, great one, would surely have gone to a terrible hell, by slaying your eldest brother.

Note on the text: Corrected धर्मभीरुत्वाद्धवं → धर्मभीरुत्वाद्ध्रुवं (misprint in Wikisource; broken conjunct, dropped र and ु; the critical edition has dhruvam), ज्येतुस्य → ज्येष्ठस्य (misprint; the critical edition has jyeṣṭhasya) and वथात् → वधात् (misprint; थ for ध; the critical edition has vadhāt). Line 1 reads यायान्महत्तमः where the critical edition has aiṣyan mahattamaḥ (recension variant, kept).

sa tvaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ rājānaṃ dharmasaṃhitam | prasādaya kuruśreṣṭhametadatra mataṃ mama

So appease that king, the best of the upholders of dharma, the chief of the Kurus, who is devoted to righteousness. This is my counsel here.

Verse 7 (8.75.7)

prasādya bhaktyā rājānaṃ prīte caiva yudhiṣṭhire | prayāvastvaritau yoddhuṃ sūtaputrarathaṃ prati

Once you have won the king over with devotion, and Yudhishthira is pleased, we two will go swiftly to fight against the charioteer's son's chariot.

Note on the text: Wikisource reads प्रयावस्त्वरितौ योद्धुम् where the critical edition has prayāmas tvaritā yoddhum. Recension variant, kept.

Verse 8 (8.75.8)

hatvā tu samare karṇaṃ tvamadya niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ | vipulāṃ prītimādhatsva dharmaputrasya mānada

And when you have killed Karna in battle today with your sharp arrows, give great joy to Dharma's son, O giver of honour.

Note on the text: Wikisource reads हत्वा तु समरे कर्णम् where the critical edition has hatvā sudurjayaṃ karṇam (recension variant, kept); the rest agrees with CE 8.50.7.

Verse 9 (8.75.9)

Then Arjuna, O great king, full of shame, bowed his head and fell at the feet of Dharmaraja.

Note on the text: Corrected धर्तराजस्य → धर्मराजस्य (misprint in Wikisource; त for म, giving a non-word; the critical edition has dharmarājasya) and लज्जपा → लज्जया (misprint; प for य; the critical edition has lajjayā). Line 2 reads प्रपद्य शिरसा नतः where the critical edition has prapede śirasānagha (recension variant, kept).

uvāca bharataśreṣṭhaṃ prasīdeti punaḥ punaḥ | kṣamasva rājanyatproktastvaṃ mayā dharmabhīruṇā

He said to the best of the Bharatas again and again, "Be gracious. Forgive, O king, what I said to you, I who was in dread of breaking dharma."

Note on the text: Speaker: line 1 is narration and Arjuna's words begin in line 2, so the verse stays with Sanjaya. Line 2 reads यत्प्रोक्तस्त्वं मया धर्मभीरुणा where the critical edition has yat proktaṃ dharmakāmena bhīruṇā (recension variant, kept).

Seeing Dhananjaya, destroyer of his foes, the bull of the Bharatas, weeping at his feet, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira —

ruditvā suciraṃ kālaṃ bhrātarau sumahādyutī | kṛtaśaucau mahārāja prītimantau babhūvatuḥ

After weeping for a long time, the two brothers of great splendour, their hearts cleansed, became happy, O great king.

Verse 15 (8.75.15)

Note on the text: Corrected तस्य कर्ण कर्णस्य → तस्य कर्म कर्णस्य (misprint in Wikisource; ण for म, giving the name twice and no object for दृष्ट्वा; the critical edition has karma). Line 2 reads न तु मे जीवितं प्रियम् where the critical edition has na ca me jīvitaṃ priyam (kept).

yena tvaṃ pīḍito bāṇairdṛḍhamāyamya kārmukam | tasyādya karmaṇaḥ karṇaḥ phalamāpsyati dāruṇam

For the deed by which he afflicted you with his arrows, bending his bow hard, Karna will today reap a dreadful fruit.

Verse 40 (8.75.40)

adya tvāmupayāsyāmi karṇaṃ hatvā mahīpate | sabhājaye tvāmākrandāditi satyaṃ bravīmi te

Today, O lord of the earth, after killing Karna I shall come back to you from the clamour of battle and honour you. I tell you this truly.

Note on the text: Wikisource's wording differs from CE 8.50.33 (similarity 0.895): line 2 reads सभाजये त्वामाक्रन्दात् ("I shall honour you, from the clamour [of battle]") where the critical edition has sabhājayitum ākrandāt; recension variant, kept.

Verse 41 (8.75.41)

nāhatvā vinivartiṣye karṇamadya raṇājirāt | iti satyena te pādau spṛśāmi jagatīpate

I shall not turn back from the battlefield today without having killed Karna. I touch your feet, O lord of the earth, in oath on this truth."

Note on the text: Corrected विनिषर्तिष्ये → विनिवर्तिष्ये (misprint in Wikisource; ष for व, giving a non-word; the critical edition has vinivarte).

Verse 42 (8.75.42)

iti bruvāṇaṃ sumanāḥ kirīṭinaṃ | yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prāha vaco bṛhattaram | yaśo'kṣayaṃ jīvitamīpsitaṃ te | jayaṃ sadā vīryamarikṣayaṃ tadā

To Kiritin as he spoke thus, Yudhishthira, glad at heart, said these weightier words: "May your fame never fade, may your life be as you wish; may victory, valour and the destruction of your foes ever be yours.

Note on the text: Not matched by the alignment: this and the next verse are the critical edition's star passage 8.50.34d*0738_01–04 (with the speaker line *0738_00 सञ्जय उवाच). Speaker: lines 1–2 are narration and Yudhishthira's blessing fills lines 3–4, so the verse stays with Sanjaya; the page prints the heading सञ्जय उवाच here.

Verse 43 (8.75.43)

prayāhi vṛddhiṃ ca diśantu devatā | yathāhamicchāmi tavāstu tattathā | prayāhi śīghraṃ jahi karṇamāhave | purandaro vṛtramivātmavṛddhaye

Go forth to prosperity, and may the gods grant it; may it be to you as I wish. Go quickly and kill Karna in battle, as Purandara killed Vritra for his own advancement."

Note on the text: Corrected आत्मवृद्वये → आत्मवृद्धये (misprint in Wikisource; द्व for द्ध, giving a non-word; the critical edition has ātmavṛddhaye). Not matched by the alignment: the critical edition's star passage 8.50.34d*0738_05–08. Speaker: the whole verse is Yudhishthira's blessing, though it falls under the page's heading सञ्जय उवाच; given to him.
