Bhima Slays Duhshasana and Drinks His Blood

Bhima and Duhshasana fight; Duhshasana cuts Bhima's bow and horses, Bhima dismounts and kills Duhshasana's horses with his mace, and hurls the mace at him. Remembering Draupadi's humiliation, Bhima throws Duhshasana down, demands to know which hand dragged her hair, and tears that arm from its socket. He tears open Duhshasana's chest and drinks his blood, declaring it sweeter than milk, honey or sugarcane, and the Kaurava warriors who see him flee in terror.

Verse 1 (8.87.1)

sa rājaputreṇa samārcchadugra- | duḥśāsanena nikṛto nikṛtyā

Bhima, who had been wronged through treachery, came upon the prince, the fierce Duhshasana.

Note on the text: Corrected सर राजपुत्रेण → स राजपुत्रेण (misprint in Wikisource; 'sara' for sa, with a stray र; the critical edition reads sa rājaputreṇa). Normalised the page's double hyphen (“--”) marking a word split between lines to the single hyphen used for such breaks. Adhyaya note: checked against the raw page (a table, rows labelled 8-87-1 to 8-87-35, with the heading सञ्जय उवाच before verse 1, the section heading भीमेन राज्ञां समक्षं दुःशासनवक्षसो रक्तपानम्, and the colophon of adhyaya 87); every label carries 87 (rows 20 and 23 are numbered 20f and 23f, see those verses), the text is this adhyaya's own (critical edition 8.61, mostly as its Appendix I Nos. 30–32 and star passages) and no verse is repeated from another adhyaya of the parva. Below the colophon the page prints only two commentary glosses (8-87-27 योधानाक्षिप्य उवाचेत्यन्वयः and 8-87-32 अहितस्य शत्रोःदुःशासनस्य लोहितस्य रक्तस्य) and a numbering line; neither is added. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as the star passage 8.61.1*0928 (lines 01–02). The hyphen after उग्र marks a word split between lines, read here as the compound उग्रदुःशासनेन (the critical edition's star reads ugraṃ duḥśāsanena). The page prints no speaker heading for the many speeches in this adhyaya; they are given to Bhima and Duhshasana where they fill whole verses (22, 24, 25, 32), the rest being narration with quoted speech.

Verse 2 (8.87.2)

tatrākarodduṣkaraṃ rājaputro | duḥśāsanaḥ kuruvīro mahātmā | yadbhīmasenaṃ pratiyodhayadraṇe | jambho yathā śakramudāravīryam

There the prince Duhshasana, the great-souled hero of the Kurus, did a deed hard to do, in that he fought Bhimasena in battle, as Jambha fought the mighty Shakra.

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 correspond to the critical edition's 8.61.1a (line 2 reads दुःशासनः कुरुवीरो महात्मा for duḥśāsanas tumule yudhyamānaḥ); lines 3–4 are its star passage 8.61.1b*0929 (lines 01–02).

Verse 3 (8.87.3)

dhanucchittvā bhīmasenasya saṅkhye | ṣaḍbhiḥ śaraiḥ sārathimabhyavidhyat | tato'vidhyattriṃśatā bhīmasenaṃ | vareṣubhirvanyamiva dvipendram

Cutting Bhimasena's bow in the battle, he pierced his charioteer with six arrows, and then pierced Bhimasena with thirty fine arrows, as one pierces a wild lord of elephants.

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 correspond loosely to the critical edition's 8.61.1c (ciccheda bhīmasya dhanuḥ kṣureṇa; ṣaḍbhiḥ śaraiḥ sārathim apy avidhyat); lines 3–4 to its 8.61.2a (tato 'bhinad bahubhiḥ kṣipram eva vareṣubhir bhīmasenaṃ mahātmā; compare also the star passage 8.61.1d*0930). Recension variants, the page's readings kept.

Verse 4 (8.87.4)

sa kārmukaṃ gṛhya tu bhārasādhanaṃ | bhīmastadā rājaputraṃ hyavidhyat | pañcāśatairbāṇagaṇaiḥ stanānantare | totrairyathā tīvravegaṃ dvipendram

Then Bhima, taking up another strong bow, pierced the prince in the chest with fifty volleys of arrows, as a great elephant of fierce speed is pierced with goads.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0001–0004 (8.61.2b@030_0001–0004). Line 3 reads पञ्चाशतैर्बाणगणैः स्तनानन्तरे for pañcāśatā bāṇagaṇaiḥ stanāntare, line 4 तोत्रैर्यथा तीव्रवेगं for tottrair yathātīva bhinad (recension variants, the page's readings kept).

Verse 5 (8.87.5)

tatastu rājanvirathaṃ mahātmā | duḥśāsano bhīmasenaṃ cakāra | nihatya saṅkhye caturo'sya vāhā- | ñchittvā ratheṣāṃ punareva cākṣipat

Then, O king, the great-souled Duhshasana made Bhimasena chariotless: he killed his four horses in the battle, cut the chariot-pole, and flung it away.

Note on the text: Corrected चतुरोऽस्य बाहा → चतुरोऽस्य वाहा (misprint in Wikisource; ब for व, 'bāhān' would be 'arms', but the horses are meant; the critical edition reads vāhāñ). Normalised the page's double hyphen (“--”) marking a word split between lines to the single hyphen used for such breaks. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0005–0008 (8.61.2b@030_0005–0008). Line 1 reads ततस्तु राजन्विरथं for tato 'tividdho virathaṃ (a recension variant, the page's reading kept).

Verse 6 (8.87.6)

tataḥ kṣitistho hyavaruhya yānā- | dvṛkodaro gadayā tasya vāhān | yamakṣayaṃ preṣayitvā mahātmā | rathaṃ samākarṣata rājasūnoḥ

Then Vrikodara, the great-souled, dismounting from his chariot and standing on the ground, sent his horses to the abode of Yama with his mace, and dragged away the prince's chariot.

Note on the text: Corrected क्षितिस्वो → क्षितिस्थो (misprint in Wikisource; स्व for स्थ, 'kṣitisvaḥ' is not a word; the critical edition reads kṣitistho). Corrected ह्यबरुह्य → ह्यवरुह्य (misprint in Wikisource; ब for व; the critical edition reads avaruhya). Corrected मदया तस्य → गदया तस्य (misprint in Wikisource; म for ग, 'madayā' makes no sense with the horses' killing; the critical edition reads gadayā). Corrected समाकर्पत → समाकर्षत (misprint in Wikisource; प for ष, 'samākarpata' is not a word; the critical edition reads samākarṣata). Normalised the page's double hyphen (“--”) marking a word split between lines to the single hyphen used for such breaks. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0009–0012 (8.61.2b@030_0009–0012).

Verse 7 (8.87.7)

tasmādavaplutya rathātsasarja | duḥśāsanastomaramugravegam | sa tena viddho hyurasi hyaprameyo | gadāṃ tasmai visasarjāprameyām

Duhshasana leapt down from the chariot and hurled a fierce, swift javelin; pierced by it in the chest, the immeasurable one hurled his immeasurable mace at him.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0013–0016 (8.61.2b@030_0013–0016).

Verse 8 (8.87.8)

tataḥ krodhādbhīmasenaḥ kṛtāni | sarvāṇi duḥkhānyanusaṃsmaranvai | saṃsmṛtya saṃsmṛtya tathā pratijñā- | mugrāmasau rājaputro vyaṣīdat

Then Bhimasena, in anger recalling all the sufferings done to him, and recalling again and again that dreadful vow, the prince was overcome with distress.

Note on the text: Corrected राजपुत्रौ व्यषीदत् → राजपुत्रो व्यषीदत् (misprint in Wikisource; the dual 'rājaputrau' cannot agree with the singular verb; the critical edition reads rājaputro). Normalised the page's double hyphen (“--”) marking a word split between lines to the single hyphen used for such breaks. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0017–0020 (8.61.2b@030_0017–0020). Line 4 reads उग्रामसौ for ugrām atho and व्यषीदत् for nyaṣīdat (recension variants, the page's readings kept).

Verse 9 (8.87.9)

sañcintitaṃ roṣamatīva vegā- | ttrayodaśābdaṃ puruṣapravīraḥ | pragṛhya vajrāśanitulyavegāṃ | gadāṃ kareṇātha vṛkodaro ruṣā

Giving vent with great force to the rage he had brooded over for thirteen years, Vrikodara, the foremost of men, seized in his hand, in wrath, a mace swift as the thunderbolt and the lightning.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0021–0024 (8.61.2b@030_0021–0024).

Verse 10 (8.87.10)

nipātayitvā pṛthivītale bhṛśaṃ | sa tāḍayāmāsa vṛkodaro balī | atīva santāḍitabhinnagātro | duḥśāsano vai nipapāta bhūmau

Hurling him down hard on the ground, mighty Vrikodara struck him again; his body battered and broken, Duhshasana fell upon the earth.

Note on the text: Corrected स ताजयामा → स ताडयामास (misprint in Wikisource; 'tājayāmā' is not a word; the critical edition reads saṃtāḍayām āsa). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0025–0028 (8.61.2b@030_0025–0028).

Verse 11 (8.87.11)

ākramya kaṇṭhe yudhi rājaputraṃ | saṃraktanetro hyabravīddhārtarāṣṭram | tadbrūhi kiṃ tvaṃ parimārgamāṇo | hyasmānparābhūya ihāgataḥ punaḥ

Pressing the prince's throat in the fight, his eyes red with rage, he said to Dhritarashtra's son: “Tell me what you are seeking, that having humiliated us you have come here once more.”

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0029–0032 (8.61.2b@030_0029–0032). Line 4 reads ह्यस्मान्पराभूय इहागतः पुनः for hy asmān parābhūya ihāgatān punaḥ (a recension variant, the page's reading kept).

Verse 12 (8.87.12)

didīpayaṃstadbhṛśadīpitaṃ me | cirārjitaṃ roṣamatipradīptam | madhu prapāsye tava koṣṭabhājanā- | dityabravīdbhīmasenastarasvī

“Rekindling my fiercely kindled wrath, long stored up and blazing high, I shall drink honey from the vessel of your belly,” said the mighty Bhimasena.

Note on the text: Normalised the page's double hyphen (“--”) marking a word split between lines to the single hyphen used for such breaks. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0033–0036 (8.61.2b@030_0033–0036). Lines 1–2 read दिदीपयंस्तद्भृशदीपितं मे । चिरार्जितं रोषमतिप्रदीप्तम् for tad idam adya bhṛśasaṃbhṛtaṃ me / cirārjitaṃ roṣam atipradīptam (a recension variant, the page's reading kept).

Verse 13 (8.87.13)

duḥśāsanaṃ kaṇṭhadeśe pramṛdnaṃ- | stataḥ krūraṃ bhīmasenaścakāra | taṃ vyaṃsayitvā sahasā sasāra | balādasau dhārtarāṣṭrastarasvī

Crushing Duhshasana's throat, Bhimasena then acted with cruelty; but the mighty son of Dhritarashtra shook him off and by force suddenly slipped away.

Note on the text: Corrected प्रमृद्रं → प्रमृद्नं (misprint in Wikisource; द्र for द्न, 'pramṛdraṃs' is not a word; the critical edition reads pramṛdnaṃs). Corrected कतं व्यंसयित्वा → तं व्यंसयित्वा (misprint in Wikisource; a stray क, 'katam'; the critical edition reads taṃ vyaṃsayitvā). Normalised the page's double hyphen (“--”) marking a word split between lines to the single hyphen used for such breaks. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0037–0040 (8.61.2b@030_0037–0040).

Verse 14 (8.87.14)

bhīmo'bhidudrāva sutaṃ tvadīyaṃ | sapatnatām darśayandhārtarāṣṭre | mṛgaṃ muhuḥ siṃhaśiśuryathā vane | tathāśvabhidrutya mahābalaṃ balī

Bhima ran at your son, showing his enmity toward Dhritarashtra's son; as a lion cub in the forest swiftly rushes again and again upon a deer, so the strong one swiftly rushed upon the very strong one.

Note on the text: Corrected सपत्रतां → सपत्नताम् (misprint in Wikisource; त्र for त्न, 'sapatratā' is not a word; the critical edition reads sapatnatām). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 30 (printed after 8.61.2b), lines 0041–0044 (8.61.2b@030_0041–0044). Verse 15 (8.87.15)

taṃ pātayitvā tu vṛkodaro'tha | jagarja harṣeṇa vinādayandiśaḥ | nādena tenākhilapārśvavartino | mūrcchākulāḥ patitāstvājamīḍha

Having felled him, Vrikodara roared with joy, making the quarters resound; with that roar all who stood about him fell down in a faint, O descendant of Ajamidha.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as the star passage 8.61.4d*0932 (lines 02–05).

O king, seeing Duhshasana there, mighty-armed Bhima, of inconceivable deeds, remembered the seizing of the queen's hair and the stripping of her clothes when she was in her season,

Note on the text: Normalised the page's double hyphen (“--”) marking a word split between lines to the single hyphen used for such breaks. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 31 (printed after 8.61.5a), lines 0003–0006 (8.61.5b@031_0003–0006).

Verse 18 (8.87.18)

anāgaso bhartṛparāṅmukhāyā | duḥkhāni dattānyapi vipracintya | jajvāla kopādatha bhīmasena | ājyaprasikto hi yathā hutāśaḥ

and thinking of the sufferings inflicted on the blameless woman, whose husbands had turned their faces away, Bhimasena blazed with anger like a fire fed with ghee.

Note on the text: Corrected विप्रचिन्त्या → विप्रचिन्त्य (misprint in Wikisource; a stray long ā, the gerund is meant; the critical edition reads vipracintya). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 31 (printed after 8.61.5a), lines 0007–0010 (8.61.5b@031_0007–0010).

Verse 19 (8.87.19)

tatrāha karṇaṃ ca suyodhanaṃ ca | kṛpaṃ drauṇiṃ kṛtavarmāṇameva | nihanmi duḥśāsanamadya pāpaṃ | saṃrakṣyatāmadya samastayodhāḥ

There he said to Karna and Suyodhana, to Kripa, to Drona's son and to Kritavarman: “Today I kill this evil Duhshasana; let all the warriors protect him today.”

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 31 (printed after 8.61.5a), lines 0011–0014 (8.61.5b@031_0011–0014).

Verse 20 (8.87.20)

Having spoken thus, mighty and swift, eager to kill, he rushed forward suddenly. So Vrikodara, advancing in the battle like a lion upon a great elephant, a lone hero, seized Duhshasana before the eyes of Suyodhana and of Adhiratha's son.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (CE Appendix I No. 31, lines 0015–0020; 8.61.5b@031_0015–0020): Wikisource prints this row as 8-87-20f with only its last quarter, सुयोधनस्याधिरथेः समक्षम् (@031_0020); the five lost quarters (ity evam uktvā sahasābhyadhāvan / nihantukāmo 'tibalas tarasvī / tathā tu vikramya raṇe vṛkodaro / mahāgajaṃ kesariṇo yathaiva / nigṛhya duḥśāsanam ekavīraḥ) are restored in the critical edition's words, in Devanagari. They fit the label exactly (a–e plus f) and are needed for the sense, since the last line has no verb and no object of its own. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 31 (printed after 8.61.5a).

Verse 21 (8.87.21)

Raising a bright, keen-edged sword and setting his foot on the throat of the trembling man, he said to him: “What you said, rejoicing with Karna and Suyodhana, crying out ‘Cow!’—”

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 are the critical edition's 8.61.6a (line 1 reads कण्ठे पदाक्रम्य for kaṇṭhe samākramya); lines 3–4 correspond loosely to its star passage 8.61.5d*0934 (lines 03–04: vadāśu yad gaur iti tad bruvāṇo / hṛṣṭaḥ samaṃ karṇasuyodhanābhyām), a recension variant, the page's reading kept.

“Wretch, the hair of Yajnaseni that was purified at the closing bath of the Rajasuya, by which hand was it dragged? Tell me that; Bhimasena asks you.”

Note on the text: Corrected जाताः कछा → जाताः कचा (misprint in Wikisource; छ for च, 'kachā' is not a word; the critical edition reads kacā). Normalised the page's double hyphen (“--”) marking a word split between lines to the single hyphen used for such breaks. Line 4 reads तद्ब्रूहि त्वां पृच्छति भीमसेनः for prabrūhi tvāṃ pṛcchate bhīmasenaḥ (a recension variant, the page's reading kept). Speaker: Bhima's speech without a printed heading, filling the whole verse.

Spoken to thus in the fight, he then, in anger, answered Bhima, rolling his eyes:

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (CE Appendix I No. 32, line 0005; 8.61.6b@032_0005): Wikisource prints this row as 8-87-23f with only its last line, जगाद भीमं परिवृत्तनेत्रः (a variant of @032_0006, jagāda bhīmaṃ parivṛtya netre), so the verse has no subject and no occasion for its speech; the one line the critical edition has before it, उक्तस्तथाजौ स तदा सरोषं (uktas tathājau sa tadā saroṣam), is restored. The label 23f suggests up to five lost lines, but the critical edition's passage has only this one at this point. evaṃ tvasau rājasutaṃ niśamya | bruvantamājau vinipīḍya vakṣaḥ | bhīmo balāttaṃ pratigṛhya dorbhyā- | muccairnanādātha samastayodhān

Hearing the prince speak thus in the battle, Bhima pressed his chest, seized him by force in both arms, and roared aloud at all the warriors.

Challenging the warriors with force, the mighty one cried: “Let him who has strength protect him! Today this Duhshasana, whose life is leaving him, shall be left armless!”

Note on the text: Corrected दुःशानं → दुःशासनं (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped syllable, 'duḥśāna' is not a name; the critical edition reads duḥśāsanaṃ). Normalised the page's double hyphen (“--”) marking a word split between lines to the single hyphen used for such breaks. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it is CE Appendix I No. 32 (printed after 8.61.6a), lines 0015–0018 (8.61.6b@032_0015–0018). Lines 1–2 read उवाच यस्यास्ति बलं स रक्षत्वसौ भवेदद्य निरस्तबाहुः for uvāca yasyāsti balaṃ kulaṃ ca / rakṣatv asau me 'dya nirastabāhuḥ (a recension variant, the page's reading kept). The page's gloss 8-87-27 (योधानाक्षिप्य उवाचेत्यन्वयः) construes the last line with उवाच; it is not added.

Verse 28 (8.87.28)

Trampling on the throat of the trembling man, assuming a supremely dreadful form, like Time and Death together, he then tore open the chest of the great chariot-warrior,

Note on the text: Corrected कृत्वाऽनु रूपं → कृत्वा तु रूपं (misprint in Wikisource; 'anu rūpam' is meaningless here; the critical edition reads kṛtvā tu rūpam). On the page these lines stand after the lines of Appendix I No. 32 (verses 22–28); in the critical edition they close No. 30, which is printed earlier (after 8.61.2b).

Verse 30 (8.87.30)

duḥśāsanasya ripuśāsanasya | uddhṛtya vakṣaḥ patitasya bhūmau | tato'pibacchoṇitamasya koṣṇa- | māsvādya cāsvādya ca vīkṣamāṇaḥ

and, tearing out the chest of fallen Duhshasana, the chastiser of foes, as he lay on the ground, he drank his warm blood, tasting it again and again as he looked on.

Note on the text: Corrected निपुशासनस्य → रिपुशासनस्य (misprint in Wikisource; नि for रि, 'nipuśāsana' is not a word; the critical edition reads ripuśāsanasya). Normalised the page's double hyphen (“--”) marking a word split between lines to the single hyphen used for such breaks. Line 1 is the last line of CE Appendix I No. 30 (8.61.2b@030_0053: duḥśāsanasya ripuśāsanasya); lines 2–4 correspond to the critical edition's 8.61.6c (utkṛtya vakṣaḥ patitasya bhūmāv / athāpibac choṇitam asya koṣṇam) and 6e (āsvādya cāsvādya ca vīkṣamāṇaḥ).

Furious and gladdened, he spoke these words: “More than drinking a mother's milk, nectar-sweet milk, the juice born of mead, honey, or barley-drink—

Note on the text: Line 1 is the second half of the critical edition's 8.61.6e (kruddho 'tivelaṃ prajagāda vākyam, reading क्रुद्धः प्रहृष्टो निजगाद वाक्यं); lines 2–3 correspond to its 8.61.7a (stanyasya mātur madhusarpiṣo vā / mādhvīkapānasya ca satkṛtasya) and line 4 loosely to 7c (divyasya vā toyarasasya pānāt); recension variants, the page's readings kept.

ye tatra bhīmaṃ rudhiraṃ pibantaṃ | duḥśāsanasya dadṛśuḥ prapannāḥ | nāyaṃ manuṣyastviti bhāṣamāṇāḥ | sarve'palāyanta bhayābhipannāḥ

All who saw Bhima there drinking Duhshasana's blood fled in fear, saying, “This is no man!”

Note on the text: Corresponds to the critical edition's 8.61.10a and 10c, with lines 3–4 of the page in the reverse order (the page reads ये तत्र भीमं रुधिरं पिबन्तं … for ye tatra bhīmaṃ dadṛśuḥ samantād …).
