Karna Parva · Adhyaya 97

Karna's Serpent Arrow and the Sinking Wheel

Karna and Arjuna fight on, and the serpent Ashvasena, an old enemy of Arjuna, slips into Karna's arrow. Krishna presses the chariot down into the earth, so that the arrow strikes only Arjuna's crown, and Arjuna kills the serpent. When Karna faints under Arjuna's arrows Krishna urges him not to delay, and the duel of divine weapons grows fiercer. Then, through a Brahmin's curse, the earth swallows Karna's chariot wheel; he reproaches dharma and begs Arjuna for a moment's pause to lift it out.

Note on the text: Three input rows (the page prints the verse as three lines, labelled 31a, 31b, 31c) joined into one verse.
