The Boar Incarnation

Bhishma begins his account of the Lord's manifestations, which have numbered in the thousands. He names first the Paushkara manifestation, when the gods and sages were born in a lotus as the Lord slept on the ocean, and then describes the Boar of Sacrifice, whose body is made of the Vedas and the parts of the sacrificial rite. In that form Vishnu lifted the sinking earth out of the single ocean on his tusk while Markandeya watched, and slew the danavas. Bhishma then announces the story of the Man-Lion.
