Ashvatthama's Curse and the Jewel for Draupadi

Krishna tells Drona's son of the old prophecy that Uttara's child will be named Parikshit, curses him to wander the earth alone for three thousand years, shunned and foul with disease, and promises to revive the child himself. Vyasa confirms the curse, and Ashvatthama gives up his jewel and goes to the forest. The Pandavas carry the jewel to Draupadi; Bhima gives it to her, reminds her of her words and of the vengeance taken, and at her word Yudhishthira wears it on his head. Then Draupadi rises, and Yudhishthira turns to question Krishna.

Verse 1 (10.16.1)

तदाज्ञाय हृषीकेशो विकृष्टं पापकर्मणा । हृष्यमाण इदं वाक्यं द्रौणिं प्रत्यब्रवीत्तदा ॥

tadājñāya hṛṣīkeśo vikṛṣṭaṃ pāpakarmaṇā | hṛṣyamāṇa idaṃ vākyaṃ drauṇiṃ pratyabravīttadā

Knowing that the weapon had been loosed by the evildoer, Hrishikesha, pleased, then spoke these words to Drona's son.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: the page is the right adhyaya (its rows are labelled 10-16-1 to 10-16-33 and the colophon reads षोडशोऽध्यायः । 16); it is the critical edition's 10.16 (36 verses). The three summary lines above the table are headings, not verses. The input's 33 verses agree with the page row for row except input verses 8-13, which cut the page's verses at the wrong half-lines (the page ends verse 8 at 9a, 9 at 10a, 10 at 11a, 11 at 12a, 12 at 13a); they are rebuilt from the page's own verse-end marks, and input verse 13 also swallowed Vyasa's two lines (13b-c, under the heading 10-16-13x). Not on the page: CE 10.16.5-8 (Ashvatthama's retort and Vasudeva's reply, with star passages 10.16.8a*0068_01-02 and 8c*0069_01-02) and the star line 10.16.15b*0071_01 (vulgate omissions; not added). Glosses printed after the table (10-16-7, 18, 20, 24, 28 and the adhyaya name) are not added. Speakers: the page heads Vaishampayana (verse 1; heading misspelt वैशम्पयन at 10-16-19x, normalised), Vyasa (13), Ashvatthama (15), Draupadi (30). Verses 2-12 are Krishna's speech to Ashvatthama, unheaded (the input carried Vaishampayana over) and given to Vasudeva as in the CE; verses 23-29 are Bhimasena's speech to Draupadi, unheaded (the input carried Vaishampayana over); verses 31-33 are narration (the input carried Draupadi's heading over). The page ends the adhyaya with its colophon and nothing after it. Line 1 reads विकृष्टम् where the CE has visṛṣṭam (recension variant, Wikisource reading kept).

virāṭasya sutāṃ pūrvaṃ snuṣāṃ gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ | upaplāvyagatāṃ dṛṣṭvā ṛtavāgbrāhmaṇo'bravīt

Once before, seeing the daughter of Virata, the daughter-in-law of the wielder of the Gandiva, when she had come to Upaplavya, a truthful brahmin said:

Note on the text: Corrected ब्रह्मणोऽब्रवीत् → ब्राह्मणोऽब्रवीत् (misprint in Wikisource; the long ā is dropped, "a brahmin said"; the CE has brāhmaṇo 'bravīt). Speaker: Vasudeva (Krishna's speech to Ashvatthama, unheaded; the input carried Vaishampayana over). Line 2 begins ऋतवाक् where the CE has vratavān (recension variant).

Verse 3 (10.16.3)

Note on the text: Speaker: Vasudeva (Krishna's speech, unheaded; the input carried Vaishampayana over). Line 1 ends भविष्यति where the CE has janiṣyati (recension variant).

Verse 4 (10.16.4)

tasya tadvacanaṃ sādhoḥ satyameva bhaviṣyati | parikṣidbhavitā hyeṣāṃ punarvaṃśakaraḥ sutaḥ

That good man's word will come true: Parikshit will be born, a son who will found their line again.

Note on the text: Corrected सत्यमेद्भविष्यति → सत्यमेव भविष्यति (misprint in Wikisource; द for व and the word-break lost; the CE has satyam eva bhaviṣyati). Speaker: Vasudeva (Krishna's speech, unheaded; the input carried Vaishampayana over).

tvāṃ tu kāpuruṣaṃ pāpaṃ viduḥ sarve manīṣiṇaḥ | asakṛtpāpakarmāṇaṃ bālajīvitaghātakam

But you all the wise know as a wretched coward, a sinner, a repeated doer of evil, a killer of the lives of children.

Note on the text: Corrected विंदुः → विदुः (misprint in Wikisource; stray anusvara, "they know"; the CE has viduḥ). Speaker: Vasudeva (Krishna's speech, unheaded; the input carried Vaishampayana over). On the page this verse follows verse 4 directly; the CE's 10.16.5-8 are not in Wikisource (vulgate omission, not added).

Verse 6 (10.16.6)

तस्मात्त्वमस्य पापस्य कर्मणः फलमाप्नुहि । त्रीणि वर्षसहस्राणि चरिष्यसि महीमिमाम् ॥

O wretch, you will have no dwelling among people; stinking of pus and blood, you will take refuge in difficult wilds and jungles, and roam the earth alone for a long time, O sinful one.

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page (printed 10-16-8a, 8b, 9a; the page ends the verse at 9a, a three-line verse): the input took only the first two lines as verse 8 and gave the third to verse 9. Lines 1-2 = CE 10.16.11c, 12a; line 3 (विचरिष्यसि पापात्मंश्चिरमेको वसुन्धराम्) differs from CE 12c (vicariṣyasi pāpātman sarvavyādhisamanvitaḥ), recension variant, Wikisource reading kept. Speaker: Vasudeva (Krishna's speech, unheaded; the input carried Vaishampayana over).

Corrected परिक्षित्तुं → परिक्षित्तु (misprint in Wikisource; stray anusvara, "but Parikshit"; the CE has parikṣit tu). knowing the supreme weapons and standing firm in the vow of the kshatriya's duty, that righteous-souled one will rule the earth for sixty years.

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page (printed 10-16-10b, 11a; the input had these lines paired differently).
