Yama Teaches Gautama How to Repay the Debt to Parents
Yudhishthira says he can never have enough of Bhishma's words on dharma and asks for more. Bhishma recounts an ancient dialogue between the sage Gautama and Yama. After Gautama had practised austerity for sixty thousand years on Mount Pariyatra, Yama came to him and offered to serve him. Gautama asked how a man is freed from the debt to his parents and wins the worlds hard to reach. Yama answers that daily worship of mother and father, with austerity, purity and truth, and many horse-sacrifices with rich fees, bring those worlds.
