The Dove's Lament and His Wife's Counsel
Bhishma continues the tale. A dove living in the tree grows anxious when his mate does not return in the storm, and he laments aloud, praising a good wife as the very substance of a home and the best friend of a man in life, sickness and the quest for dharma. His wife, caught in the fowler's cage, hears him, rejoices in his praise, and urges him to show hospitality to the fowler who has come to his house for refuge, reminding him that killing one who seeks shelter is as grave as killing a Brahmana or a cow, and that he need not grieve for her.
