Shaunaka's Teaching on Atonement and Janamejaya's Horse Sacrifice
Shaunaka teaches Janamejaya how sin is cleansed. He names the six purifiers, praises pilgrimage to Kurukshetra, the Sarasvati and other holy waters, and sets out the ways by which a repeated sin is loosed: remorse, a vow, taking up dharma, and visits to holy fords. He tells the king to win back the brahmins' favour, and ends with the answer Brihaspati once gave the gods and asuras, that good deeds done knowingly wash away a sin done unknowingly, as the rising sun drives off darkness. Shaunaka then performs the horse sacrifice for the king, who returns to his kingdom free of guilt.
