Shanti Parva · Adhyaya 166

Whom to Befriend and Whom to Shun

Yudhishthira asks what kind of men one should keep as friends and allies. Bhishma first lists the vices that mark a man who must never be befriended, above all ingratitude and betrayal of friends. He then describes the qualities of those worth allying with: good birth, truthfulness, steadiness in a friend's cause and freedom from greed. A king who allies with such men sees his realm grow like moonlight.

A friend who will listen is hard to find, and a friend who truly wishes one well is hard to find. Best of those who uphold dharma, you should explain all of this to me.
