What Austerity Means: The Tale of Suvarchala
Yudhishthira asks what is meant by austerity. Bhishma lists the meanings men give it (fasting, Vedic vows, recitation of the Veda, restraint, celibacy, living on what remains after guests are fed) and says that those who take it to mean knowledge have reached the inner Self. He then tells how Devala's daughter Suvarchala, schooled in yoga, asked to be given to a husband who was both blind and not blind. The scholar Shvetaketu answered her riddle by saying that he is without eyes for the objects of the senses and has the eye by which all things are seen. She accepted him as her husband.

yadidaṃ tapa ityāhuḥ kiṃ tapaḥ saṃprakīrtitam | upavāsamathānyattu vedācāramatho nu kim | śāstraṃ tapo mahāprājña tanme brūhi pitāmaha
What is it that they call austerity? What has been declared to be austerity: fasting, or something else, or the observance of the Veda? Is scripture austerity, O greatly wise one? Tell me this, grandfather.

pakṣamāsopavāsādīnmanyante vai tapodhanāḥ | vedavratādīni tapa apare vedapāragāḥ | vedapārāyaṇaṃ cānye cāhustatvamathāpare
Some who are rich in austerity regard fasting for a fortnight or a month, and the like, as austerity; others, masters of the Veda, say Vedic vows and the like are austerity; others say it is the recitation of the Veda; and still others say it is the truth.

yathāvihitamācārastapaḥ sarvaṃ vrataṃ gatāḥ | ātmavidyāvidhānaṃ yattattapaḥ parikīrtitam
Conduct as prescribed, and all that goes with a vow, is austerity; and whatever is the discipline of knowledge of the Self, that is declared to be austerity.
