Vichakhyu's Verse on Non-Violence
Yudhishthira asks how the body is to be kept going by one who undertakes nothing and harms no one, and Bhishma answers that a capable man should act in such a way that the body neither wastes away nor falls under death's power. He then recalls the old verse of King Vichakhyu, who, seeing a slaughtered bull and bellowing cows at a sacrifice, declared that non-violence is the greatest duty. Animal slaughter, meat, liquor and fish in rites were brought in by rogues out of desire, delusion and greed, and are not ordained in the Vedas; Vishnu is worshipped with milk-rice and flowers. Yudhishthira's question and Bhishma's answer are repeated at the close.
