Harita's Rule for the Wandering Ascetic
Yudhishthira asks what character, conduct and learning lead to the changeless abode beyond Prakriti. Bhishma answers that it is reached by one devoted to the duties of liberation, who eats lightly and rules his senses, and recalls the old song of Harita on the wandering ascetic. He leaves his house, wrongs and harms no one, bears abuse, begs only when kitchens are quiet, takes just enough to live, curbs the urges of speech, anger, violence, belly and sex, and stays the same in praise and blame. Whoever goes forth after giving all beings freedom from fear wins radiant worlds.
