The Bhrigu Sage Instructs a Prince of Janaka's Line

Bhishma tells of a prince of Janaka's line, Vasuman, who meets a sage of the line of Bhrigu while hunting and asks what is good for a man bound to a perishable body and ruled by desire. The sage answers that one should shun what is hurtful to others, practise dharma with steadiness, give with respect to worthy recipients, and serve the wise. The prince turns his mind from desire to dharma.

"Lord, what is the good for a man in his impermanent body, who is ruled by desire, hereafter and here?"

Note on the text: The page prints no speaker heading for this verse (the heading before it is Bhishma's); the verse is wholly Vasuman's direct speech, so it is given to him.
