The Soul's Departure and the Signs of Approaching Death
Yajnavalkya tells Janaka which worlds a departing soul reaches according to the part of the body through which it leaves, from the feet (Vishnu) to the crown of the head (Brahma). He then lists the signs of ill omen that mark death within a year, six months, seven nights or at once. A man who sees them should join himself to the Supreme Self, and one who wishes to live longer may hold scents and flavours within himself and, knowing the Sankhya practice of retention, conquer death by yoga and reach the eternal, unmoving abode.
