Shuka Returns to Vyasa; Vyasa's Rules for Teaching the Veda
Satisfied by Janaka's teaching, Shuka sets out for the Himalaya, where Narada also comes. Bhishma describes the holy mountain: the place where Vishnu shook Skanda's spear and Prahlada failed to lift it, and where Shiva practises austerity near the Adityaparvata. On its eastern slope Vyasa teaches the Veda to Sumantu, Vaishampayana, Jaimini and Paila, and Shuka tells his father of his talk with Janaka. The four pupils ask that no sixth pupil be taken beside them and Vyasa's son, and Vyasa answers with rules on whom the Veda may be given to, how pupils are to be tested, and how it is to be spread.
