Brihaspati Is Angry at Vasu's Sacrifice; the Sages Tell How They Sought to See Narayana
Bhishma continues: King Vasu Uparichara, a pupil of Brihaspati, holds a horse sacrifice with sixteen sages and no killing of animals. The unseen God takes his portion in person, and Brihaspati, who cannot see him, angrily threatens to leave the rite. The sages Ekata, Dvita and Trita calm him by telling how they once practised austerity in the north, were sent by a bodiless voice to the White Island, and, bewildered by the radiance there, could not see the God, though they witnessed his worshippers. Brihaspati yields and completes the sacrifice; Vasu later falls from heaven by a brahmin's curse, yet rises again through devotion to Narayana.

And he said to Uparichara: ‘I offered this portion; the God ought to have received it himself before my eyes; there is no doubt.
Note on the text: Line 1 is narration (Bhishma); the quoted speech begins in line 1 (मया भागोऽयमुद्यतः) and is Brihaspati's, continuing through the whole of verse 16. Verse 15 is mixed, so it stays with the narrator.
