The Brahmin Takes Leave of the Serpent

The Brahmin, well pleased with the serpent's account, prepares to leave, but the serpent asks what he came for and begs him not to depart as a mere passer-by. The Brahmin answers that he and the serpent are one, and that his doubt concerned the gathering of merit; he will now follow the vow of gleaning, and takes his leave.

Verse 1 (12.374.1)

āścaryaṃ nātra saṃdehaḥ suprītosmi bhujaṅgama | anvarthopagatairvākyaiḥ panthānaṃ cāsmi darśitaḥ

It is indeed a wonder, there is no doubt of it. I am well pleased, O serpent. By your meaningful words I have been shown the way.

Verse 2 (12.374.2)

svasti te'stu gamiṣyāmi sādho bhujagasattama | smaraṇīyosmi bhavatā saṃpreṣaṇaniyojanaiḥ

May good fortune be yours. I shall go, good one, best of serpents. Remember me, whenever you have errands and tasks to entrust.

Verse 3 (12.374.3)

anuktvā hṛdgataṃ kāryaṃ kvedānīṃ prasthito bhavān | ucyatāṃ dvija yatkāryaṃ yadarthaṃ tvamihāgataḥ

Without telling me the task that is in your heart, where are you setting out now? Tell me, twice-born, what your business is, and for what purpose you came here.

Verse 4 (12.374.4)

uktānukte kṛte kārye māmāmantrya dvijarṣabha | mayā pratyabhyanujñātastato yāsyasi suvrata

When the task, whether spoken of or not, has been done, take leave of me, O best of the twice-born; then, permitted by me, you may go, O man of good vows.

Verse 5 (12.374.5)

na hi māṃ kevalaṃ dṛṣṭvā tyaktvā praṇayavāniha | gantumarhasi viprarṣe vṛkṣamūlagato yathā

Having merely seen me, you should not go off, abandoning me who am so fond of you, like one who has rested at the foot of a tree, O sage.

Verse 6 (12.374.6)

tvayi cāhaṃ dvijaśreṣṭha bhavānmayi na saṃśayaḥ | loko'yaṃ bhavataḥ sarvaḥ kā cintā mayi te'nagha

I am yours, O best of the twice-born, and you are mine, without doubt. This whole world is yours; what worry can you have with me, sinless one?

Verse 7 (12.374.7)

evametanmahāprājña viditātmanbhujaṅgama | nātiriktāstvayā devāḥ sarvathaiva yathātatham

It is so, O greatly wise serpent, knower of the Self: in every way, truly, the gods are no greater than you.

Verse 8 (12.374.8)

sa eva tvaṃ sa evāhaṃ yo'haṃ sa tu bhavānapi | ahaṃ bhavāṃśca bhūtāni sarve yatra gatāḥ sadā

You are he, and I am he; what I am, that you also are. I, you and all beings are always one in that into which all have gone.

Note on the text: The alignment found no match, but this is the CE verse 12.352.8 (ya evāhaṃ sa eva tvam evam etad bhujaṃgama / ahaṃ bhavāṃś ca bhūtāni sarve sarvatragāḥ sadā), here in a different wording; the page's own reading is kept. The footnote records a variant

āsīttu me bhogipate saṃśayaḥ puṇyasaṃcaye | sohamuñchavrataṃ sādho cariṣyāmyarthasādhanam

I had a doubt, lord of serpents, about the gathering of merit. So now, good one, I shall practise the vow of gleaning, which accomplishes my aim.

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page: the input's row 9 held four lines printed under the labels 9a, 9b, 10, 10 (the last two with stray "a" and "b" marks); split here into two verses. Lines 1-2 = CE 12.352.9a, 9c. Corrected पुण्यरसंचये → पुण्यसंचये (misprint in Wikisource: stray र; CE reads puṇyasaṃcaye). The second line is the page's own reading (the CE has arthadarśanam).

Verse 10 (12.374.10)

eṣa me niścayaḥ sādho kṛtaṃ kāraṇamuttamam | āmantrayāmi bhadraṃ te kṛtārtho'smi bhujaṅgama

This is my resolve, good one, taken for the best of reasons. I take my leave of you; may good come to you. My purpose is fulfilled, O serpent.

Note on the text: Rebuilt from the raw page: second half of the input's row 9 (printed under the label 12-374-10, with the stray marks "a" and "b" before its two lines, removed here). Lines = CE 12.352.10a, 10c; the first line is the page's own reading (the CE has kṛtaḥ kāraṇavattaraḥ).
