Bhishma Hails Krishna; Krishna Names the Days Left to Him

Bhishma, hearing Krishna, folds his hands and hails him as the maker and destroyer of the worlds, saying that he beholds his divine, all-pervading form. Krishna answers that he has shown it because of Bhishma's devotion, tells him that fifty-six days of his life remain, that the Vasus wait for the sun's northward turn to receive him, and that the others have come so that he may teach Yudhishthira dharma and dispel his grief.

ete hi devā vasavo vimānā | nyāsthāya sarve jvalitāgnikalpāḥ | antarhitāstvāṃ pratipālayanti | kāṣṭhāṃ prapadyantamudakpataṅgam

These Vasus, gods blazing like fire, have mounted their celestial cars and, unseen, are waiting for you—for the sun to enter the northern quarter.
