The Orders of Life Within the King's Duty
Yudhishthira asks Bhishma to explain the four human stages of life. Bhishma answers that a king who does his duty rightly, with compassion, generosity, protection of the weak and defence of his realm, holds the rank of each order in turn: the mendicant, the forbearing, the consecrated, the forest-dweller, the student of Brahman and the householder. He ends by urging Yudhishthira to protect brahmins and the righteous, for the king shares in the dharma of those he guards.
